Taking a modest sidestep away from his usual contributions to the grand-scale big band jazz sounds of the “Gentle Forest Jazz Band”, and into a set-up tailored to work in the body of his unique compositions, the appropriately titled #1 is an energetic debut from trumpeter Yusuke Sase with a breakout release of untethered original compositions and creative bite. Every track recorded in one or two takes to capture creative flow at the source and avoid treading over familiar ground, Sase pushes his band to perform in the heat of the moment.
A prolific collaborator himself, and unafraid to hop between a range of genres in the Answer To Remember project of which he is a member, while this album is a strictly jazz affair, his supporting members reflect his sonic explorations and features bassist Kazuki Arai from the alternative rock band King Gnu, drummer Shu Akimoto from underground free-Jazz band dCprG, guitarist Kei Koganemaru from the techno-pop The Chef Cooks Me and pianist Kouta Kaihori from the aforementioned Answer To Remember. Sase stands imposing with his leads, and his skill and precision as band leader glides across the tracks and wraps within a rich hall of sound.
