By the late 60s he had already put out enough quality records to secure a place within the top Brazilian songwriters of all time, but his career luckily did not stop there and he continued releasing amazing music over the following decades until this day.
By the dawn of the 1970s, the multi-talented Valle was entering a new era, ready to test the government censors (Brazil was under strict military rule since a coup d’état in 1964) and express a socially aware stance and a playful hodge-podge of musical styles including samba, bossa nova, baião (a rhythmic beat from the rural northeast of Brazil), black American music, and rock.
“Garra” was originally released in 1971 and maintains the same socially conscious content as in his previous album while also combining diverse musical styles and influences. Recorded amongst sessions for a steady stream of popular TV soap opera soundtracks, it brought us Valle’s classics such as ‘Com Mais De 30’, ‘O Cafona’, ‘Vinte E Seis Anos De Vida Normal’ and the rare groove classic ‘Wanda Vidal.’

DESCRIPTION
On October 7, 1974, the now-historic “Gusano mecánico” was released — the only full-length album by the legendary Bolivian rock band Climax. Founded in 1968 from the remnants of the disbanded Los Black Byrds and the unrealized project The Turtles, Climax was formed by guitarist José “Pepe” Eguino and bassist Javier Saldías, who developed a strong bond with drummer Álvaro Córdova, cemented by their shared passion for rock. Together, they embarked on a journey of self-discovery, spending several months in the United States during a crucial period straddling the end of the Summer of Love and the lead-up to Woodstock.
This period, perhaps the most significant of the 1960s countercultural movement, saw an explosion of artistic expression driven by dissatisfaction with the society that the youth had inherited from their parents. Within this context, the influence of iconic bands such as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Blue Cheer, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer played a pivotal role in their decision to return to Bolivia and form the country's first ‘power trio’. Their first EPs paid tribute to their musical heroes.
They quite literally brought psychedelic and prog rock to Bolivia by carrying new, experimental vinyl records in their luggage, at a time when rock music (and music in general) had very limited exposure due to the scarcity of media resources. Their musical project reflected their influences and laid down the first traces of what would later be called heavy rock, a genre that never achieved widespread popularity in Bolivia.
“Gusano mecánico” was a big leap from their previous recordings. Climax embarked on a prog rock journey, exploring themes such as the loss of personal essence and the vindication of indigenous peoples. Their rebellious discourse opposed the mechanization of humankind brought about by past decades of industrial exploitation in which they resist being absorbed by the system. It became a landmark of prog rock in Bolivia and one of the few conceptual albums produced in the country.
Over time, Climax’s music has gained cult status among prog rock fans. Their album became a coveted collector’s item, highly valued by music lovers worldwide. It was even included in 5001 Record Collector Dreams by Hans Pokora, receiving the highest rarity rating and hailed as a musical masterpiece. Only two South American albums received this distinction.

Ruben Rada played a pivotal role in the development of Uruguayan music. By blending Afro-Uruguayan traditions with rock, soul, jazz, and funk, he paved a new musical path that began in the 1960s and continues to evolve today. Throughout his career, he has consistently been surrounded by talented musicians who have been integral to his sound. This was especially true with Daniel “Lobito” Lagarde, bassist and founding member of the iconic band Totem in the early 1970s; Ricardo Nolé, keyboardist, arranger, and musical director of Rada’s band in Argentina during the 1980s; and Nelson Cedréz, the drummer who has been by Rada’s side since the 1990s. In 2016, these three musicians reunited to form Rada’s Old Boys, releasing an album of jazz-infused reinterpretations of Rada’s songs that earned rave reviews. Now, they return with Manos, a bold new album that reimagines Rada’s works from every phase of his career, featuring deeply personal renditions and a special guest appearance from Rada himself on one track.

Zamrock was a bona-fide rock scene: on the African continent, only Nigeria can claim one so comprehensive, and Nigeria's was largely catalyzed and funded by subsidiaries of the European major labels. Zamrock was as independent as its newly-named country, formerly known as Northern Rhodesia.
Zamrock is startling in its completeness, especially for a scene that emerged, unfurled, and disappeared so quickly. From Musi-O-Tunya's fusion of Fela's Afro-beat, Hendrix's rock, South African jazz and traditional Zambian melodies and rhythms to Salty Dog's acid folk/rock, Zambia's rock scene contained all of rock's subgenres.
Zamrock was much more than an imitation of American and European rock music: it quickly became a uniquely Zambian movement, befitting of its name. WITCH, Paul Ngozi and Amanaz sound nothing like other rock music from the African continent - or elsewhere.
Zamrock came from a nation's youth carrying forth the momentum of a political and social revolution with a musical revolution that maintained the fiery power of early rock - in the mid-to late-'70s. From that era, Zamrock's energy is matched only by the punk and hip hop scenes of England and America.

“In my category, I’m the one and only,” proclaimed Oakland legend Too $hort on his 1990 single “Short But Funky.” Few disagreed then, and even fewer would do so decades later. First appearing in the mid-1980s, slinging homemade tapes out of his car trunk, the man born Todd Shaw has always stayed true to himself. Although he is known more for the dirty side of his rap game, on “Short But Funky,” he also reminds listeners of an important fact: “There’s a serious side to everything I say.” Short Dog’s In The House, was $hort’s sixth studio album, and his second for the Jive label. By the time it hit, he was a West Coast legend, but his rep was growing Eastwards, as the rest of the country started opening its ears to new sounds. Peaking at #20 on the national Billboard 200 chart, the album was exactly what his dedicated fans expected funky, 70s drenched beats made for cars on the boulevard, and no nonsense lyrics that made more sense and dropped more knowledge than he was ever given credit for. For examples of his conscious side, look no further than the P-Funk fueled “It’s Your Life” or the album’s lead single, “The Ghetto.” The album’s second single “Short But Funky” landed somewhere in the middle of $hort and Todd Shaw, talking about where he was at as the new decade broke, and making it clear that he wasn’t going anywhere. His mortality was mainly on his mind after rumors had surfaced the year before that he had died in a crack house. He speaks directly to this crazy episode on “Dead Or Alive.” And although it’s mostly a solo affair, he brings in some heavy artillery and a lot of not for the kids profanity on “Ain’t Nothin’ But A Word To Me,” featuring none other than Ice Cube In between, $hort distributed plenty of tales and charisma for fans to eat up, continuing to build his legendary status as one of the rap trailblazers of the era. The third LP in Now Again's Memphis Rap series is Gotta Get My Pimp On. Lo-fi pimp player raps recorded on a four-track cassette in Shawty Pimp's bedroom in 1994.
This is part of Now Again Records multiple LP series on the History of Memphis Rap, which attempts to capture Memphis and its underground rap scene as it began to produce some of the most distinctive music of the ’90s.
This was a unique hip-hop strain – visceral and often vicious. It was a local, low-fi, cassette-tape based movement – yet it went on to change the course of rap music.
These albums have never been pressed on vinyl – until now. From Skinny Pimp and Carmike to Gangsta Blac and Shawty Pimp, these albums have been relegated to the proverbial bins of history and bootlegged, with unofficial copies still fetching top dollar on the secondary market. These albums were all licensed directly from their original creators, and come on limited edition colored vinyl with artist-approved imagery for their first LP iterations.
You can read the story of the Memphis Rap scene in a 12-page, oversized booklet with notes by Torii MacAdams. It captures the story of Memphis rap starting with the city’s founding and ending with an auto supply shop that sold these albums over the counter, with all points in between.

When we last heard from Bay Area producer DEAD PERRY, he was riding high on the critical success of "The Art Of Reanimation" album. That album was a re-imagining of legendary Hieroglyphics crew emcee Casual's work from his "Big Head Science" album.
However on the forthcoming "Acoustic Shadows" album, as the title implies things get a bit dark. As he relays "when I made (The Art Of Reanimation) with Cas, I wanted to cater to the specific sound that Hieroglyphics has, but put my spin on it without making it too dark (though there are a couple of dark gems sprinkled throughout). I knew that my next album was going to be a solo LP and I wanted it to be something special. Dark and grimy has always been my style of beat making so I wanted to showcase that with this record."
However, the title also has a double meaning to the producer. "The term Acoustic Shadows comes from a Civil War phenomenon that refers to a sonic blind spot. Due to geographical obstructions disrupting sound waves you could think you are a great distance from the battlefield while you could already be in it. It also refers to my style keeping to the shadows and out of the limelight, when I only appear in photos wearing a mask, it's not because I’m on that post MF Doom craze, it's because I came from graffiti and graffiti artists let their art be their only face to the public."
That style is showcased throughout the forthcoming album, including his choice of collaborators include Casual, Daniel Son, Estee Nack, Al Divino, Raz Fresco, Ill Bill, Goretex, Hus Kingpin, Crimeapple, Planet Asia, Da Flyy Hooligan, Izrell, P-Dirt, J-Spliff and cuts from DJ Eclipse. Concepts also lent itself to the grime including the John Carpenter-esque synth laden "Call Me Snake" track, which inadvertently inspired the emcees. As DEAD PERRY relates "I give the beats a place-holder title until the track is done so this one was 'Die Kurt Russ.' P-Dirt chose to create the concept off the beat title. Crafting that song was a fun experience." It also has a full circle moment as DEAD PERRY and Casual expand their "White Crown" single from their previous project on this release enlisting Planet Asia to drop an additional Afro-Centric verse.

DESCRIPTION
When we last heard from Bay Area producer DEAD PERRY, he was riding high on the critical success of "The Art Of Reanimation" album. That album was a re-imagining of legendary Hieroglyphics crew emcee Casual's work from his "Big Head Science" album.
However on the forthcoming "Acoustic Shadows" album, as the title implies things get a bit dark. As he relays "when I made (The Art Of Reanimation) with Cas, I wanted to cater to the specific sound that Hieroglyphics has, but put my spin on it without making it too dark (though there are a couple of dark gems sprinkled throughout). I knew that my next album was going to be a solo LP and I wanted it to be something special. Dark and grimy has always been my style of beat making so I wanted to showcase that with this record."
However, the title also has a double meaning to the producer. "The term Acoustic Shadows comes from a Civil War phenomenon that refers to a sonic blind spot. Due to geographical obstructions disrupting sound waves you could think you are a great distance from the battlefield while you could already be in it. It also refers to my style keeping to the shadows and out of the limelight, when I only appear in photos wearing a mask, it's not because I’m on that post MF Doom craze, it's because I came from graffiti and graffiti artists let their art be their only face to the public."
That style is showcased throughout the forthcoming album, including his choice of collaborators include Casual, Daniel Son, Estee Nack, Al Divino, Raz Fresco, Ill Bill, Goretex, Hus Kingpin, Crimeapple, Planet Asia, Da Flyy Hooligan, Izrell, P-Dirt, J-Spliff and cuts from DJ Eclipse. Concepts also lent itself to the grime including the John Carpenter-esque synth laden "Call Me Snake" track, which inadvertently inspired the emcees. As DEAD PERRY relates "I give the beats a place-holder title until the track is done so this one was 'Die Kurt Russ.' P-Dirt chose to create the concept off the beat title. Crafting that song was a fun experience." It also has a full circle moment as DEAD PERRY and Casual expand their "White Crown" single from their previous project on this release enlisting Planet Asia to drop an additional Afro-Centric verse.

This album originally was planned for release in 2022—that’s when Defcee and Parallel Thought first connected, built on a mutual respect for each other’s discographies. Defcee was fresh off the success of his Backwoodz debut, Trapdoor (produced by Messiah Musik), while Parallel Thought had just released The Wild End, their collaborative album with another Chicago legend, Tree. An initial beat pack was sent, quickly followed by a demo of songs recorded by Defcee. The foundation was there, but then—silence. Long story short…life happened. Fast forward to July 2024, and Defcee spent a week in Freehold, recording the entirety of Other Blues at Parallel Thought’s studio. Other Blues lays bare small joys, big hurts, and both swagger and insecurity in equal measure, serving as a testament to honesty, redemption, and a refocusing on life’s most important priorities. Deeply personal and introspective, the album showcases Defcee’s raw, honest lyricism over Parallel Thought’s smoked-out, heavy, hazy jazz soundscapes. New R&B discoveries continue to emerge and entertain the many followers of the New Breed musical cult; nobody finds more than the Kent connoisseurs.
Berna Dean’s two previously unheard recordings are by far her best. They were laid down at Cosimo Matassa’s New Orleans’ studios by GNP Crescendo but eschewed in favour of two relatively average sides. The great 50s R&B songwriter Jesse Stone provides a rocker for the much-admired Jimmy Breedlove and a super-catchy ‘This Morning’ for an unknown mixed vocal group that has a joyous gospel feel. Jesse also penned ‘Private Eye’, a classic early 60s story-song, for Buddy Wilkins which was issued on Al Sears’ Tri-Ess imprint.
The title track is used twice, on two very different Fraternity recordings. Kenny Smith’s version was issued in 1964 and has many followers, but the equally meritorious Coasters-inspired composition by the Citations is newly discovered. Win Menifee’s ‘I’m Runnin’ Around’ from the same Cincinnati label comes complete with a fascinating back-story.
There are three cover versions. Vermettya Royster’s ‘All Around The World’ is backed by James Brown’s 1961 band, while Roosevelt Lee 1970 update of the 1947-originated ‘Hey Little Girl’ funks the tune up a la Godfather of soul. The cover that will make the biggest noise is undoubtedly west coast band the Afterglows’ version of Barbara Lynn’s evergreen dancer ‘I’m A Good Woman’ – this is a future monster.
Golden Crest provides two fabulous male vocal group sides – the swinging ‘What’s On Your Mind’ by Eddie Daye’s Four Bars and the delightful harmonies of the appropriately-named, but unknown Delights ‘Mary Don’t You Weep’.
Blues still thrived into the 70s as Albert Washington’s mean and moody ‘Case Of The Blues’ proves. Smokey Wilson took the music into the late 70s with the storming ‘Goin’ Away Baby (Round Like An Apple)’, which benefits here from a 45-style edit. His Pioneer Club on 88th Street in South Central L A provides the atmospheric photo for this collection.
More early 60s movers come from Wilbur “Hi-Fi” White with ‘Don’t Look Now’, future hit songwriter Johnny Madara’s raucous ‘You Make Me Mad’ and Big Boy Groves ‘Bucket O’ Blood’ which brilliantly describes the kind of club these tracks would fit right into.
The LP version loses a few tracks, but so many collectors have strong preferences we’ve thrown the vinyl junkies a lifeline.

Allen Toussaint’s debut as a solo artist, “The Wild Sound Of New Orleans” was released in 1958 under the name of Tousan. In the 60s, he established himself as a songwriter, producer and arranger for a number of labels and generated hits like ‘Working In The Coal Mine’ for Lee Dorsey that got to #8 in the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966. Other classic tracks that Toussaint either wrote, produced or arranged included ‘Fortune Teller’, Lipstick Traces’ and ‘Ooh Poo Pah Do’.
It was only in 1970 that he found time to record another solo album, aptly entitled “Toussaint”. As well as serving up his own version Of ‘Working In The Coal Mine’, Toussaint recorded other originals like ‘From A Whisper To A Scream’ and ‘Everything I Do Is Gonna Be Funky’. There were also four instrumental tracks – ‘Pickles’, ‘Louie’, ‘Either’ and a sublime version of ‘Cast Your Fate To The Wind’ listed as ‘Allen Toussaint at the piano’.
The original version of Toussaint was released in 1970 on Scepter records and is now hailed as a soulful classic. Ace were delighted to first reissue it in 1985 as “From A Whisper To A Scream” with the addition of a bonus track and with a slightly different running order.
On “Toussaint” we present the original album as Allen Toussaint intended it to be heard. Remastered to perfection this is an essential purchase.

The album was recorded in the winter of 1975 with the help of the same group of musicians who had accompanied him a few months earlier at a concert at Zeleste to debut new songs: a mix of Valencian musicians from bands like Paranoia Dea and guitarist Eduardo Bort’s group.
Once again, Riba left everyone bewildered with a work that, on its own, gave early substance to what would eventually be known as roc català, of which Riba may well have been its most authentic representative.
There are nods to Lou Reed, Ray Davies, and Kevin Ayers, but the core of "Electròccid…" is defined by Riba’s own authorship. With lyrics that veer from poetic to absurdly ironic, Riba explores themes like the moon, the stars, death, love, women, the devil, and the bourgeoisie—fueling the originality that made him such a unique artist. It's striking how naturally and effortlessly Riba incorporated the Catalan language into the rock idiom—and vice versa.

In 1966, Óscar Agudelo recorded this elusive and lesser-known collector’s gem called “Pa’ mi muñeca” for Discos Fuentes. It is a rarity where the artist took an unexpected musical turn and performed several porros, paseaitos, gaitas, and cumbias, evoking the swaying motion and rolling waves of Colombia’s Caribbean sound.
It resonates with the echoes of a romantic minstrel laced with an unexpected richness of nuance, a hallmark of the cumbia sound. It’s exactly the kind of music that lights up a tambó or a fandango circle on carnival night. A dozen tracks, none of them new, but suffused with a consciousness that can be understood within the context of their time and with the personality of the artist bold enough to bring them to life.
‘Madre cumbia’ opens the album with a festive, nostalgic mood, infused with the simple beauty and the electrifying beat of the tropics that immediately makes you want to get up and dance. It’s a fantastic example of how to perform a song with passion and make the listener fall instantly in love with an album. ‘Pa’ mi muñeca’, the title track, is a fast-paced paseaito that explores new paths that took a shortcut to the dance halls. A showstopper on the dance floor. ‘Está como mango’ is a porro-cumbia that charms with a rich tapestry of compliments, the calling card of many old-school tropical songs. ‘Cumbia de recuerdo’, ‘Cumbia suave’, ‘Cumbia de Santa Marta’, are back-to-back cumbias.
This is an album devoted to recreating the strength of a musical genre that’s been the soundtrack of Colombian life for decades. It’s a record dedicated to capturing good times, filled with simple dreams, steeped in joyful energy, and shining with the uninhibited flair, or better said, the quality of the sixties.
This album represents a milestone on the route cumbia had taken, both for Discos Fuentes and maestro Agudelo.

In 1979, Record Player privately pressed and issued a solitary
45 on their Gem City Records imprint in Dayton, Ohio. Though they had recorded a host of other songs, and were on the verge of signing to a major label, their trajectory stalled and the band splintered by the early 1980s. In the early 2000s, Record Player principle Charles Jackson surfaced with their unreleased songs. Todate, only two Record Player songs have been reissued, as part of Now-Again's long-running Soul Cal series. Now, the entirety of their oeuvre is presented here as Free Your Mind, and their story detailed in words by Bret Sjerven. DESCRIPTION
LA-based producer Real Bad Man and Detroit artist ZelooperZ release their joint album Dear Psilocybin via the producer’s own Real Bad Man Records. The album marks the duo’s first collaboration, culminating in a full-length project that also features guest appearances from Boldy James, MAVI and a verse from The Alchemist. On Dear Psilocybin, ZelooperZ invokes unconventional production out of Real Bad Man to match his own unpredictable and outlandish delivery, working outside of traditional song structures and existing in a lane of his own. The Detroit multihyphenate, who is an integral part of Danny Brown’s Bruiser Brigadecollective and also an accomplished visual artist, painted the album’s corresponding cover artwork as well.
“I definitely haven’t made anything like this before, it’s a very subtle version of my music as far as tone, ” ZelooperZ explained in a conversation with Real Bad Man for his RBM Radio show. He elaborates on the off-kilter approach to the way he recorded to say, “the album feels like a movie soundtrack for a film about a man losing his mind and getting spurts of memories along the way. ”
Speaking about how the project differs from the rest of his collaborative catalog, RBM says, “It’s trippy and it’s a little different – but the main goal was for it to be authentic to Z and his process. ” That dedication to authenticity rings true across his catalog, drawing back to the foundations of his beginnings as a producer, learning the fundamentals of sampling, experimenting with chords and learning to piece songs together by ear. Real Bad Man is the production moniker of visual artist and designer Adam Jay Weissman. I put the vocals over the beat and sent them over to him. He was feeling it and decided to write new lyrics for it and we just started building from there.” Regarding the album title Dese added “I always like to do a play on words on my name for my album titles. This one had such a classic Hip Hop feel to it I decided to reference a classic Hip Hop figure.”

The plant that pressed them ended up shutting down, and the boxes of vinyl were stuck in a warehouse in Poland. When Marshall Chess decided to combine a rock group with some of the best voices he could get his hands on he invented a stream of psychedelic rock that was quite different from the one that emerged in Detroit with the help of George Clinton and Norman Whitfield.
Partly this was Marshall’s hippy sensibility, but it was one that fused perfectly with vocalist Minnie Riperton’s own word-view and the musical genius – “no other word for it”: Marshall Chess − of Charles Stepney.
Working across a cleverly arranged mix of originals and cover versions, the recordings featured some of the finest musicians that you could find in Chicago including drummer Morris Jennings, bass players Louis Satterfield and Phil Upchurch, and revolutionary guitarist Pete Cosey, who would later join Miles Davis’ group. Cosey’s guitar playing on their fourth album “Songs”, released in 1969, is incendiary and unparalleled. The vocals were arranged as a perfect choir with a series of leads most notably Minnie, Sidney Barnes and Mitch Aliota.
True success − rather than doing well enough − eluded them, with some bad decisions being made and bad luck also dogging them. When Chess left the company and Barnes the group it looked as if the writing was on the wall for Rotary Connection, but Charles Stepney wanted one more go. The New Rotary Connection came together with a refreshed vocal line up featuring Minnie, Kitty Haywood and Shirley Wahls and songs by Stepney, Minnie’s husband Richard Rudolph and Terry Callier.
“Hey Love” was the album that appeared and it is a gem, that features the astounding ‘I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun’ - later a UK hit in 1997 for Nuyorican Soul, ‘Love Has Fallen On Me’ - later recorded as a tribute to Stepney by Chaka Khan, the beautiful title track and Callier’s stunning ’Song For Everyman’. However the album failed to sell and there was no more records.
As time passed the late 60s and early 70ws productions of Charles Stepney became some of the best loved and most influential of the ear, influencing UK groups such as 4 Hero, Radiohead and more recently Jessie Ware, and “Hey, Love” has been considered one of the peaks of his work.

As part of Ace 50 BGP has hooked up with our old friends at Concord Music to reissue one of the most important albums in our story. In 1987 as the dance jazz scene morphed into acid jazz Billy Hawks ‘Oh Baby (I Believe I’m Losing You)’ was filling the dance floors where either Gilles Peterson or Baz Fe Jazz were playing.
The Prestige Records album that featured the track ‘Heavy Soul!’ was impossible to find, and frustrated DJs were desperately trying to find a copy. BGP - the Ace label that the two DJs helmed - reissued the album and put the in-demand track onto a 12 inch single. With supply sufficient it became a club smash, crossing over to become a mod classic and one of the most important cuts from our scene.
In the ensuing years the tracks status has remained undimmed and the album has never turned up in significant numbers, and yet it has never been reissued since. With an attention to detail that has always been the Ace way, we have carefully mastered the record to be as close to the sound of the original Van Gelder mastering of 1967, and created and accurate representation of the album and label cover art.
Hawks never lived to be rediscovered, but through our musical detective work we tracked down his brother and found out as much of his story as possible, and also unearthed a couple of pictures. The Virginian born organist with the amazing voice was a fixture on the North Eastern lounge bar circuit, which was the entertainment backbone off Black American music at the time, and his full story is told on the illustrated inner sleeve that comes with this release.

DESCRIPTION
In discussions of the classic hip-hop era of the 1980s, frequently lost in the shuffle is the homegrown scene of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is unfortunate due to the wealth of talent the scene produced, including bona fide legends such as Schoolly D, Three Times Dope, Cash Money & Marvelous, and of course, the wildly successful DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. Frequently underrated is Tuff Crew, who were billed as "Philly's First Rap Supergroup", and consisted of a crew of ethnically diverse MCs and a DJ, who were regular performers of North Philly's famed After Midnight club, and who definitely represented a more hardcore rap style than some of their fellow Philly crews. Throughout the mid-to-late 1980s, Tuff Crew performed alongside some of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time, including Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, and 2 Live Crew, but never reached the heights of commercial success, despite landing various singles on the Billboard Rap charts. The peak of this success undoubtedly came with the release of their 1988 LP Danger Zone, which featured 10 tracks of classic 80s rap, including the Billboard-charting "My Part Of Town" (#23 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles charts). This album cemented Tuff Crew in the hip-hop history books as one of the dopest crews to ever come out of Philly, and unlike most late 80s rap albums, the lyrics and beats still bang hard in 2025.

From Chahoud’s liner notes: “I spent years going through thousands of titles from one of the largest catalog of Lebanese and Arabic music, by one of the earliest labels in the Arab world, Voix De L’Orient, to handpick the 12 songs that represent a survey into this momentous catalog.The Lebanese musical experiment, stretching almost seven decades, has offered one of the most complex and fully fledged modern Oriental scenes of the Arab world. These 12 songs were released in different periods and embody a wide range of musical ideas from the most adventurous on the Voix De L’Orient label, those musicians that played major roles in the renaissance of ancient musical traditions. Jackpot Records is extremely proud to announce our reissue of the revered reggae album 1976's War Ina Babylon by Max Romeo & The Upsetters. Originally released on Island Records, the album is considered one of the greatest Reggae albums of all time and was a massive influence on the UK punk movement that was just starting to bubble to the surface. The record's incredible power belies an unlikely partnership between one of the world's greatest producers (and experimenters in sound), Lee "Scratch" Perry, and vocalist Max Romeo (who by 1976 had performed on over 120 7" singles) Romeo had been transforming from his "rude" records to writing lyrics with social themes as the era in Jamaica was rife with poverty, gangs, and politically motivated killings. As he was looking to produce protest music at it's most powerful alongside music that would never leave the listener's souls, Lee Perry and Max Romeo started collaborating together. Recorded in two weeks in 1976, utilizing Lee Perry's kitchen sink production, War Ina Babylon is considered part of Lee Perry's 'holy trinity' Black Ark produced LPs released by Island Records (Junior Murvin's Police and Thieves and The Heptones' Party Time being the other classics LPs in the trinity), this LP continues to find new fans with every passing generation.

The melding of these ingredients would inspire and provide the blueprints for Scarface, Miami Vice, and other depictions of 80s criminal decadence. “I Can’t Let Go” is the first ever compilation of Brooklyn singer Evie Sands' 60s recordings, featuring all 15 tracks from her first 8 singles on the vinyl version. The CD edition boasts a further 11 cuts, featuring her complete 45s from 1963-1970.
Singing from her pre-teens and first working in the studio at a tender age, Sands’ powerful and mesmerising voice belied her youth and featured on classic 45s cherished by soul and rock collectors alike, as well as girl group and femme pop aficionados.
After fledgling releases on ABC and Gold, Sands teamed up with the writing, arrangement and production team of Chip Taylor and Al Gorgoni in 1965 for a series of excellent, and frequently astounding records on the Blue Cat, Cameo and A&M labels, culminating in her much admired first LP. Along the way she cut the original (and definitive) versions of ‘Take Me For A Little While’, ‘I Can't Let Go’, northern soul floor filler ‘Picture Me Gone’, and the stately ‘Angel Of The Morning’, and watched on in disbelief as they all became hits for other artists. Finally achieving a sizeable hit of her own in 1969 with ‘Any Way That You Want Me’, she followed a short retirement in the early 70s with a well-received comeback LP, “Estate Of Mind” and a brace of US Top 50 hit singles.
Honing her production and writing skills along the way led to a veritable who's who of pop royalty queuing up to work with her and record her songs; Barbra Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Karen Carpenter, Dionne Warwick and later Missy Elliot all covered Sands' compositions and Elvis very nearly did too...
“I Can’t Let Go” has been compiled by Jai Rathbone with the full co-operation of Evie Sands who shares her thoughts and insights on this early part of her career. Lavishly illustrated this is a must-have purchase.

The Monks were five American G.I.s stationed near Heidelberg, West Germany. Originally performing as a typical beat group under the name the 5 Torquays, they evolved into something far more radical. After discovering guitar feedback by accident and embracing a raw, percussive approach, they caught the attention of two German ad men—Walther Niemann and Karl Remy—who became their managers and helped reinvent their identity.
Dressed in monks' robes with tonsured hair and noose neckties, the band developed a confrontational, rhythm heavy sound. Nowhere is this clearer than in the album’s opening track, ‘Monk Time,’ which captures their entire aesthetic in under three minutes. A pounding, repetitive groove of bass and drums anchors the track, layered with distorted guitar bursts, percussive electric banjo, chaotic organ stabs, and unrestrained, shouted vocals. It’s a declaration of intent—urgent, jarring, and unforgettable.
Their sole studio album, produced by Jimmy Bowien and recorded in Cologne in late 1965, defied musical norms. From the explosive opener ‘Monk Time’ to the fierce ‘Complication,’ “Black Monk Time” rejected flower power for something more urgent—anger, humor, and innovation.
At the time, Polydor Records deemed the music too radical for American audiences, delaying its U.S. release. Trio Mocotó is best known for being the powerhouse backing band behind Brazilian legend Jorge Ben during the height of his creative explosion in the early 1970s. But their contribution to music goes far beyond the supporting role—they were instrumental in shaping what would become known as samba funk, a vibrant fusion of traditional Brazilian rhythms with the groove and energy of American soul and funk music.
