The third LP in Now Again's Memphis Rap series is Gotta Get My Pimp On. Lo-fi pimp player raps recorded on a four-track cassette in Shawty Pimp's bedroom in 1994.
This is part of Now Again Records multiple LP series on the History of Memphis Rap, which attempts to capture Memphis and its underground rap scene as it began to produce some of the most distinctive music of the ’90s.
This was a unique hip-hop strain – visceral and often vicious. It was a local, low-fi, cassette-tape based movement – yet it went on to change the course of rap music.
These albums have never been pressed on vinyl – until now. From Skinny Pimp and Carmike to Gangsta Blac and Shawty Pimp, these albums have been relegated to the proverbial bins of history and bootlegged, with unofficial copies still fetching top dollar on the secondary market. These albums were all licensed directly from their original creators, and come on limited edition colored vinyl with artist-approved imagery for their first LP iterations.

When we last heard from Bay Area producer DEAD PERRY, he was riding high on the critical success of "The Art Of Reanimation" album. That album was a re-imagining of legendary Hieroglyphics crew emcee Casual's work from his "Big Head Science" album.
However on the forthcoming "Acoustic Shadows" album, as the title implies things get a bit dark. As he relays "when I made (The Art Of Reanimation) with Cas, I wanted to cater to the specific sound that Hieroglyphics has, but put my spin on it without making it too dark (though there are a couple of dark gems sprinkled throughout). I knew that my next album was going to be a solo LP and I wanted it to be something special. Dark and grimy has always been my style of beat making so I wanted to showcase that with this record."
However, the title also has a double meaning to the producer. "The term Acoustic Shadows comes from a Civil War phenomenon that refers to a sonic blind spot. Due to geographical obstructions disrupting sound waves you could think you are a great distance from the battlefield while you could already be in it. It also refers to my style keeping to the shadows and out of the limelight, when I only appear in photos wearing a mask, it's not because I’m on that post MF Doom craze, it's because I came from graffiti and graffiti artists let their art be their only face to the public."
That style is showcased throughout the forthcoming album, including his choice of collaborators include Casual, Daniel Son, Estee Nack, Al Divino, Raz Fresco, Ill Bill, Goretex, Hus Kingpin, Crimeapple, Planet Asia, Da Flyy Hooligan, Izrell, P-Dirt, J-Spliff and cuts from DJ Eclipse. Concepts also lent itself to the grime including the John Carpenter-esque synth laden "Call Me Snake" track, which inadvertently inspired the emcees. As DEAD PERRY relates "I give the beats a place-holder title until the track is done so this one was 'Die Kurt Russ.' P-Dirt chose to create the concept off the beat title. Crafting that song was a fun experience." It also has a full circle moment as DEAD PERRY and Casual expand their "White Crown" single from their previous project on this release enlisting Planet Asia to drop an additional Afro-Centric verse.

This album originally was planned for release in 2022—that’s when Defcee and Parallel Thought first connected, built on a mutual respect for each other’s discographies. Defcee was fresh off the success of his Backwoodz debut, Trapdoor (produced by Messiah Musik), while Parallel Thought had just released The Wild End, their collaborative album with another Chicago legend, Tree. An initial beat pack was sent, quickly followed by a demo of songs recorded by Defcee. The foundation was there, but then—silence. Long story short…life happened. Fast forward to July 2024, and Defcee spent a week in Freehold, recording the entirety of Other Blues at Parallel Thought’s studio. Other Blues lays bare small joys, big hurts, and both swagger and insecurity in equal measure, serving as a testament to honesty, redemption, and a refocusing on life’s most important priorities. In 1976, legendary musician and composer Roy Ayers released one of the most iconic albums of his career: "Everybody Loves the Sunshine." New R&B discoveries continue to emerge and entertain the many followers of the New Breed musical cult; nobody finds more than the Kent connoisseurs.
Berna Dean’s two previously unheard recordings are by far her best. They were laid down at Cosimo Matassa’s New Orleans’ studios by GNP Crescendo but eschewed in favour of two relatively average sides. The great 50s R&B songwriter Jesse Stone provides a rocker for the much-admired Jimmy Breedlove and a super-catchy ‘This Morning’ for an unknown mixed vocal group that has a joyous gospel feel. Jesse also penned ‘Private Eye’, a classic early 60s story-song, for Buddy Wilkins which was issued on Al Sears’ Tri-Ess imprint.
The title track is used twice, on two very different Fraternity recordings. Kenny Smith’s version was issued in 1964 and has many followers, but the equally meritorious Coasters-inspired composition by the Citations is newly discovered. Win Menifee’s ‘I’m Runnin’ Around’ from the same Cincinnati label comes complete with a fascinating back-story.
There are three cover versions. Vermettya Royster’s ‘All Around The World’ is backed by James Brown’s 1961 band, while Roosevelt Lee 1970 update of the 1947-originated ‘Hey Little Girl’ funks the tune up a la Godfather of soul. The cover that will make the biggest noise is undoubtedly west coast band the Afterglows’ version of Barbara Lynn’s evergreen dancer ‘I’m A Good Woman’ – this is a future monster.
Golden Crest provides two fabulous male vocal group sides – the swinging ‘What’s On Your Mind’ by Eddie Daye’s Four Bars and the delightful harmonies of the appropriately-named, but unknown Delights ‘Mary Don’t You Weep’.
Blues still thrived into the 70s as Albert Washington’s mean and moody ‘Case Of The Blues’ proves. Smokey Wilson took the music into the late 70s with the storming ‘Goin’ Away Baby (Round Like An Apple)’, which benefits here from a 45-style edit. His Pioneer Club on 88th Street in South Central L A provides the atmospheric photo for this collection.
More early 60s movers come from Wilbur “Hi-Fi” White with ‘Don’t Look Now’, future hit songwriter Johnny Madara’s raucous ‘You Make Me Mad’ and Big Boy Groves ‘Bucket O’ Blood’ which brilliantly describes the kind of club these tracks would fit right into.
The LP version loses a few tracks, but so many collectors have strong preferences we’ve thrown the vinyl junkies a lifeline.

Allen Toussaint’s debut as a solo artist, “The Wild Sound Of New Orleans” was released in 1958 under the name of Tousan. In the 60s, he established himself as a songwriter, producer and arranger for a number of labels and generated hits like ‘Working In The Coal Mine’ for Lee Dorsey that got to #8 in the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966. Other classic tracks that Toussaint either wrote, produced or arranged included ‘Fortune Teller’, Lipstick Traces’ and ‘Ooh Poo Pah Do’.
It was only in 1970 that he found time to record another solo album, aptly entitled “Toussaint”. As well as serving up his own version Of ‘Working In The Coal Mine’, Toussaint recorded other originals like ‘From A Whisper To A Scream’ and ‘Everything I Do Is Gonna Be Funky’. There were also four instrumental tracks – ‘Pickles’, ‘Louie’, ‘Either’ and a sublime version of ‘Cast Your Fate To The Wind’ listed as ‘Allen Toussaint at the piano’.
The original version of Toussaint was released in 1970 on Scepter records and is now hailed as a soulful classic. Ace were delighted to first reissue it in 1985 as “From A Whisper To A Scream” with the addition of a bonus track and with a slightly different running order.
On “Toussaint” we present the original album as Allen Toussaint intended it to be heard. Remastered to perfection this is an essential purchase.

The album was recorded in the winter of 1975 with the help of the same group of musicians who had accompanied him a few months earlier at a concert at Zeleste to debut new songs: a mix of Valencian musicians from bands like Paranoia Dea and guitarist Eduardo Bort’s group.
Once again, Riba left everyone bewildered with a work that, on its own, gave early substance to what would eventually be known as roc català, of which Riba may well have been its most authentic representative.
There are nods to Lou Reed, Ray Davies, and Kevin Ayers, but the core of "Electròccid…" is defined by Riba’s own authorship. With lyrics that veer from poetic to absurdly ironic, Riba explores themes like the moon, the stars, death, love, women, the devil, and the bourgeoisie—fueling the originality that made him such a unique artist. It's striking how naturally and effortlessly Riba incorporated the Catalan language into the rock idiom—and vice versa.

Indianapolis' legendary Rhythm Machine is one of the rare funk bands that transitioned between eras of funk's history seamlessly, creating awesome funk sides for a host of independent labels between the years of 1968 and 1976. Born out of cult Indy funk band The Highlighters' ashes, the Rhythm Machine was founded in the early '70s by bass player James Boone and guitarist James Brantley.
Their self-titled and only LP, originally released in 1976, is a wild, super-groovy ride with tight band energy and a bunch of unexpected twists that keep things interesting from start to finish. At first, you might catch some Earth, Wind & Fire vibes—deep basslines, funky beats, and killer horn sections—but dig a little deeper and you’ll find something a little looser, a little cooler. In 1966, Óscar Agudelo recorded this elusive and lesser-known collector’s gem called “Pa’ mi muñeca” for Discos Fuentes. It is a rarity where the artist took an unexpected musical turn and performed several porros, paseaitos, gaitas, and cumbias, evoking the swaying motion and rolling waves of Colombia’s Caribbean sound.
It resonates with the echoes of a romantic minstrel laced with an unexpected richness of nuance, a hallmark of the cumbia sound. It’s exactly the kind of music that lights up a tambó or a fandango circle on carnival night. A dozen tracks, none of them new, but suffused with a consciousness that can be understood within the context of their time and with the personality of the artist bold enough to bring them to life.

Todate, only two Record Player songs have been reissued, as part of Now-Again's long-running Soul Cal series. Too $hort claimed he was retiring in 1996 when he dropped album #10 Gettin' It, but a player like $hort couldn't stay away. After a three-year hiatus, he got back in the game and on July 11th, 1999, he dropped his 11th studio album aptly named Can't Stay Away. Too $hort had been living in Atlanta for several years and this would be the first of many albums to come that would incorporate ATL's southern influences alongside his West Coast Bay Area sound. Jazze Pha, Jermaine Dupri, and NY to ATL transplant funk lord Erick Sermon contributed to the production along with features by Memphis' 8Ball & MJG and Houston's Scarface. The Bay Area sound would come from Ant Banks and Quint Black with West Coast features by E-40, B-Legit, Daz, and Soopa Fly. The album would also introduce several up-and-coming rappers from all regions of the US dubbed Nation Riders who were signed to Too $hort's new label imprint $hort Records. Can't Stay Away is classic Too $hort, full of more pimp tales including a sequel to Born To Mack's Freaky Tales and he don't stop rappin' biiiiattch. It takes grindin' to be a king and Houston's Mike Jones' work ethic of "You Don't Work, You Don't Eat, You Don't
Grind, You Don't Shine" had his phone blowing up in 2005 with the release of his major label debut Who is Mike Jones? on Asylum/Swisha House/Warner Records. Mike Jones started rapping in the early 2000s and he released a couple of independent albums on his own label Ice Age Entertainment before linking up with Michael "5000" Watts of Swisha House. He recorded the underground single "Still Tippin" with Texas contemporaries Paul Wall and Slim Thug, which appeared on the Swisha House compilation The Day Hell Broke Loose 2. The song, full of southern hip-hop slang and braggadocio, was an ode to the classic car culture in Houston, Texas, and could be heard bumpin' out the trunks of cars nationwide with its heavy bass and classical string loops. Before the release of Who Is Mike Jones? girls would ignore him, but after the release of "Still Tippin" they were all up on him, which led to the release of the single "Back Then" where he shouted out his real cell phone number that played a major part in the marketing and promotion of the album.You could call 281-330-8004 and get his voicemail and leave a message, but sometimes he would answer, which led to spreading the word of Mike Jones' debut album. "Back Then" was also a top-selling ringtone because (back then) you had to buy and download ringtones, unlike today. Mike truly went viral before going viral was even a thing. After dropping the two hit singles, Who Is Mike Jones? was released on April 19th, 2005, and would sell over a million copies that year, leading to certified platinum status. Twenty years later, this Texas Rap classic still holds up with features from other H-Town legends including S.U.C.'s Big Moe (RIP),Bun B, Paul Wall and Lil Keke. Juicy J & DJ Paul of Three 6 Mafia added their Memphis touch to the "Got It Sewed Up Remix" and the album ends with a heartfelt dedication to Mike Jones' late Grandmother on "Grandma". DESCRIPTION
LA-based producer Real Bad Man and Detroit artist ZelooperZ release their joint album Dear Psilocybin via the producer’s own Real Bad Man Records. The album marks the duo’s first collaboration, culminating in a full-length project that also features guest appearances from Boldy James, MAVI and a verse from The Alchemist. On Dear Psilocybin, ZelooperZ invokes unconventional production out of Real Bad Man to match his own unpredictable and outlandish delivery, working outside of traditional song structures and existing in a lane of his own. The Detroit multihyphenate, who is an integral part of Danny Brown’s Bruiser Brigadecollective and also an accomplished visual artist, painted the album’s corresponding cover artwork as well.
“I definitely haven’t made anything like this before, it’s a very subtle version of my music as far as tone, ” ZelooperZ explained in a conversation with Real Bad Man for his RBM Radio show. He elaborates on the off-kilter approach to the way he recorded to say, “the album feels like a movie soundtrack for a film about a man losing his mind and getting spurts of memories along the way. ”
Speaking about how the project differs from the rest of his collaborative catalog, RBM says, “It’s trippy and it’s a little different – but the main goal was for it to be authentic to Z and his process. ” That dedication to authenticity rings true across his catalog, drawing back to the foundations of his beginnings as a producer, learning the fundamentals of sampling, experimenting with chords and learning to piece songs together by ear. RBM builds a cohesive production arc around each artist he works with, catered to their strengths as artists, working with a variety of lyrical stylists including Memphis rapper Lukah, Pink Siifu, Blu, Kool Keith, Elcamino & more.
Real Bad Man is the production moniker of visual artist and designer Adam Jay Weissman. Big Dese, over two decades deep in the game makes a masterclass of balancing lyrical disrespect and self-deprecation. Fellow Massachusetts neighbor and producer Confidence has laced tracks and projects for such notables as The Legion, Neek The Exotic, Purpose (Tragic Allies), Rashad and Edo G. He specializes in creating an ill array of head-nodders crafted from deep, dusty crates of funk, soul, disco and other vinyl sources.
The emcee and producer initially met over two decades ago. Speaking on the genesis of “Kool Moe Dese” Confidence recalled “I was working on a beat recently and found some old vocals from Dese that were never used. I put the vocals over the beat and sent them over to him. He was feeling it and decided to write new lyrics for it and we just started building from there.” Regarding the album title Dese added “I always like to do a play on words on my name for my album titles. This one had such a classic Hip Hop feel to it I decided to reference a classic Hip Hop figure.”

Big Dese, over two decades deep in the game makes a masterclass of balancing lyrical disrespect and self-deprecation. Fellow Massachusetts neighbor and producer Confidence has laced tracks and projects for such notables as The Legion, Neek The Exotic, Purpose (Tragic Allies), Rashad and Edo G. He specializes in creating an ill array of head-nodders crafted from deep, dusty crates of funk, soul, disco and other vinyl sources.
The emcee and producer initially met over two decades ago. Speaking on the genesis of “Kool Moe Dese” Confidence recalled “I was working on a beat recently and found some old vocals from Dese that were never used. I put the vocals over the beat and sent them over to him. He was feeling it and decided to write new lyrics for it and we just started building from there.” Regarding the album title Dese added “I always like to do a play on words on my name for my album titles. This one had such a classic Hip Hop feel to it I decided to reference a classic Hip Hop figure.”

The plant that pressed them ended up shutting down, and the boxes of vinyl were stuck in a warehouse in Poland. Staying true to that era that nurtured some of music’s greatest icons that was founded on live instrumentation, the album features complete live instrumentation seen through the stunning sonic arrangements. The project was largely produced and composed by Jean and his team of close collaborators that includes Hoskins (Khalid, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Don Toliver, Wiz Khalifa), Vic Wainstein (Tyler, The Creator, Frank Ocean, Mac Miller, Odd Future), Biako (Masego, Fousheé, Fana Hues, Baby Rose), and Johnny May (Sam Short, Che Lingo).
