DESCRIPTION

This is part of Now Again Records multiple LP series on the History of Memphis Rap, which attempts to capture Memphis and its underground rap scene as it began to pro- duce some of the most distinctive music of the 90s.
This was a unique hip-hop strain - visceral and often vicious. It was a local, low-fi, cas- sette-tape based movement - yet it went on to change the course of rap music. These albums have never been pressed on vinyl - until now. From Skinny Pimp and Car- mike to Gangsta Blac and Shawty Pimp, these albums have been relegated to the prover- bial bins of history and bootlegged, with unofficial copies still fetching top dollar on the secondary market. These albums were all licensed directly from their original creators, and come on limited edition colored vinyl with artist-approved imagery for their
first LP iterations.
You can read the story of the Memphis Rap scene in a 12-page, oversized booklet with notes by Torii MacAdams. It captures the story of Memphis rap starting with the city’s founding and ending with an auto supply shop that sold these albums over the counter, with all points in between.

In the late 2010's, Paten joined forces with Edan and they toured the globe as one of the most beloved live rap shows in the industry. Declaime also known as Dudley Perkins grew up living across the street from Madlib at around the age of eight and nine. They introduced themselves through a week long pop locking battle from across the street, it was Declaime against Madlib and his sister stacey. Once they became friends Madlib began to show Declaime his early beat tapes. He use to use pencils paper foil, pillows and his beatboxing skills which was far advanced back then. Decalime and his family moved and they lost contact for a short time. Declaime would run into Madlib every once in a while in the neighborhood grocery store where Madlib once worked. It wasnt until about 93-94 when Declaime's brother who was still classmates with Madlib aka Otis Jackson and some of the earlier crate diggas palace crew members introduced Decalime to Kankick who was in a group at that time with Otis, WildChild and DJ Romes, they were called the Lootpack. Other crew members were Kazi, Medaphoar, gods Gift, Gran Vanac, Nick Anderson, Abstract Wino and Roc C. Kankick was the leader of a crew called the Fonk Farm, CDP and The Farm were 2 crews in one. Madlib headed CDP. Tons of recordings were made by these two crews, many battles were fought to get any sort of recognition in the town of Oxnard. Madlib with the help of the crew, forged a new sound that soon was heard all around the world, to this day. Collection of tracks recorded from 93-96 at the Crate Diggas Palace in Oxnard California. Originaly pressed up on cassettes and dats, these tracks were lost for almost 25 years. Re-masterd by DJ Rhomes and available for the first time in all formats.

Czarface and Stress Eater MC Esoteric followed up his proper debut solo album (2007’s Egoclapper) with this conceptual masterpiece, now available for the first time on vinyl!
This full-length is an audio drama based on a bizarre dream that Esoteric had sometime around 2006. As he describes it, “It was a crazy period in my life: I was engaged, in the process of finding a new home; I was starting my own label on a totally independent, self-financed level...I had a lot of stress and reserva- tions in my life. Celph Titled and I had just built my Pterolab studio, I had started to really produce and was really getting into it, making a ton of beats and had a ton of ideas. I guess all that stress and those feelings just manifested.” The results were what became Saving Seamus Ryan.
The album is broken into chapters rather than individual tracks and includes vocal contributions from the legendary and consummate Hip Hop theme-writer Masta Ace, K.Flay, Blacastan, Main Flow, and Qwill. Colorful characters from Eso’s childhood and subconscious also help along the journey (including a cameo by DJ Premier). Esoteric handles most of the production duties himself, but is also backed by career-long partner 7L.

“In my category, I’m the one and only,” proclaimed Oakland legend Too $hort on his 1990 single “Short But Funky.” Few disagreed then, and even fewer would do so decades later. First appearing in the mid-1980s, slinging homemade tapes out of his car trunk, the man born Todd Shaw has always stayed true to himself. Although he is known more for the dirty side of his rap game, on “Short But Funky,” he also reminds listeners of an important fact: “There’s a serious side to everything I say.” Short Dog’s In The House, was $hort’s sixth studio album, and his second for the Jive label. By the time it hit, he was a West Coast legend, but his rep was growing Eastwards, as the rest of the country started opening its ears to new sounds. Peaking at #20 on the national Billboard 200 chart, the album was exactly what his dedicated fans expected funky, 70s drenched beats made for cars on the boulevard, and no nonsense lyrics that made more sense and dropped more knowledge than he was ever given credit for. For examples of his conscious side, look no further than the P-Funk fueled “It’s Your Life” or the album’s lead single, “The Ghetto.” The album’s second single “Short But Funky” landed somewhere in the middle of $hort and Todd Shaw, talking about where he was at as the new decade broke, and making it clear that he wasn’t going anywhere. His mortality was mainly on his mind after rumors had surfaced the year before that he had died in a crack house. He speaks directly to this crazy episode on “Dead Or Alive.” And although it’s mostly a solo affair, he brings in some heavy artillery and a lot of not for the kids profanity on “Ain’t Nothin’ But A Word To Me,” featuring none other than Ice Cube In between, $hort distributed plenty of tales and charisma for fans to eat up, continuing to build his legendary status as one of the rap trailblazers of the era. When we last heard from Bay Area producer DEAD PERRY, he was riding high on the critical success of "The Art Of Reanimation" album. That album was a re-imagining of legendary Hieroglyphics crew emcee Casual's work from his "Big Head Science" album.
However on the forthcoming "Acoustic Shadows" album, as the title implies things get a bit dark. As he relays "when I made (The Art Of Reanimation) with Cas, I wanted to cater to the specific sound that Hieroglyphics has, but put my spin on it without making it too dark (though there are a couple of dark gems sprinkled throughout). I knew that my next album was going to be a solo LP and I wanted it to be something special. Dark and grimy has always been my style of beat making so I wanted to showcase that with this record."
However, the title also has a double meaning to the producer. "The term Acoustic Shadows comes from a Civil War phenomenon that refers to a sonic blind spot. Due to geographical obstructions disrupting sound waves you could think you are a great distance from the battlefield while you could already be in it. It also refers to my style keeping to the shadows and out of the limelight, when I only appear in photos wearing a mask, it's not because I’m on that post MF Doom craze, it's because I came from graffiti and graffiti artists let their art be their only face to the public."
That style is showcased throughout the forthcoming album, including his choice of collaborators include Casual, Daniel Son, Estee Nack, Al Divino, Raz Fresco, Ill Bill, Goretex, Hus Kingpin, Crimeapple, Planet Asia, Da Flyy Hooligan, Izrell, P-Dirt, J-Spliff and cuts from DJ Eclipse. Concepts also lent itself to the grime including the John Carpenter-esque synth laden "Call Me Snake" track, which inadvertently inspired the emcees. As DEAD PERRY relates "I give the beats a place-holder title until the track is done so this one was 'Die Kurt Russ.' P-Dirt chose to create the concept off the beat title. Crafting that song was a fun experience." It also has a full circle moment as DEAD PERRY and Casual expand their "White Crown" single from their previous project on this release enlisting Planet Asia to drop an additional Afro-Centric verse.

When we last heard from Bay Area producer DEAD PERRY, he was riding high on the critical success of "The Art Of Reanimation" album. That album was a re-imagining of legendary Hieroglyphics crew emcee Casual's work from his "Big Head Science" album.
However on the forthcoming "Acoustic Shadows" album, as the title implies things get a bit dark. As he relays "when I made (The Art Of Reanimation) with Cas, I wanted to cater to the specific sound that Hieroglyphics has, but put my spin on it without making it too dark (though there are a couple of dark gems sprinkled throughout). I knew that my next album was going to be a solo LP and I wanted it to be something special. Dark and grimy has always been my style of beat making so I wanted to showcase that with this record."
However, the title also has a double meaning to the producer. "The term Acoustic Shadows comes from a Civil War phenomenon that refers to a sonic blind spot. Due to geographical obstructions disrupting sound waves you could think you are a great distance from the battlefield while you could already be in it. It also refers to my style keeping to the shadows and out of the limelight, when I only appear in photos wearing a mask, it's not because I’m on that post MF Doom craze, it's because I came from graffiti and graffiti artists let their art be their only face to the public."
That style is showcased throughout the forthcoming album, including his choice of collaborators include Casual, Daniel Son, Estee Nack, Al Divino, Raz Fresco, Ill Bill, Goretex, Hus Kingpin, Crimeapple, Planet Asia, Da Flyy Hooligan, Izrell, P-Dirt, J-Spliff and cuts from DJ Eclipse. Concepts also lent itself to the grime including the John Carpenter-esque synth laden "Call Me Snake" track, which inadvertently inspired the emcees. As DEAD PERRY relates "I give the beats a place-holder title until the track is done so this one was 'Die Kurt Russ.' P-Dirt chose to create the concept off the beat title. Crafting that song was a fun experience." It also has a full circle moment as DEAD PERRY and Casual expand their "White Crown" single from their previous project on this release enlisting Planet Asia to drop an additional Afro-Centric verse.

This album originally was planned for release in 2022—that’s when Defcee and Parallel Thought first connected, built on a mutual respect for each other’s discographies. Defcee was fresh off the success of his Backwoodz debut, Trapdoor (produced by Messiah Musik), while Parallel Thought had just released The Wild End, their collaborative album with another Chicago legend, Tree. LA-based producer Real Bad Man and Detroit artist ZelooperZ release their joint album Dear Psilocybin via the producer’s own Real Bad Man Records. The album marks the duo’s first collaboration, culminating in a full-length project that also features guest appearances from Boldy James, MAVI and a verse from The Alchemist. On Dear Psilocybin, ZelooperZ invokes unconventional production out of Real Bad Man to match his own unpredictable and outlandish delivery, working outside of traditional song structures and existing in a lane of his own. He elaborates on the off-kilter approach to the way he recorded to say, “the album feels like a movie soundtrack for a film about a man losing his mind and getting spurts of memories along the way. ”
Speaking about how the project differs from the rest of his collaborative catalog, RBM says, “It’s trippy and it’s a little different – but the main goal was for it to be authentic to Z and his process. ” That dedication to authenticity rings true across his catalog, drawing back to the foundations of his beginnings as a producer, learning the fundamentals of sampling, experimenting with chords and learning to piece songs together by ear. Lord Finesse brings back the rich, layered, and warm sounds of ‘90s hip-hop on his new instrumental album, The SP1200 Project: Sounds & Frequencies in Technicolor. Across the 17 tracks on here, the Bronx native delivers an undeniably potent dose of sample-flipping boom-bap that’s brimming with funk and soul.
Lord Finesse was inspired to put this project together after hearing how modern music tends to be so heavily compressed. “Sonically, a good amount of today’s hip-hop music sounds like it’s being played under a heavy quilt,” he explains. “What that means is certain frequencies are buried, and they can’t be felt or heard, destroying the vibe and energy of the production—no matter how good it is.”
As a result, he began to dig into his own crates to uncover gems that he could share with the world. While some of the tracks were produced for his own albums or for other artists, Finesse also found some never-before-heard instros. Lord Finesse brings back the rich, layered, and warm sounds of ‘90s hip-hop on his new instrumental album, The SP1200 Project: Sounds & Frequencies in Technicolor. Across the 17 tracks on here, the Bronx native delivers an undeniably potent dose of sample-flipping boom-bap that’s brimming with funk and soul.
Lord Finesse was inspired to put this project together after hearing how modern music tends to be so heavily compressed. “Sonically, a good amount of today’s hip-hop music sounds like it’s being played under a heavy quilt,” he explains. “What that means is certain frequencies are buried, and they can’t be felt or heard, destroying the vibe and energy of the production—no matter how good it is.”
As a result, he began to dig into his own crates to uncover gems that he could share with the world. While some of the tracks were produced for his own albums or for other artists, Finesse also found some never-before-heard instros. Those previously unreleased beats were intended for the likes of Big L and Grand Puba, among others, but they instead found a home in his digital stash—until now.
Sounds & Frequencies in Technicolor is truly a feast for hip-hop heads with its neck-snapping drums and chopped-up samples. From one track to the next, your ears are treated to nostalgia-tinged sounds from a variety of genres. “Symphonic Collective” could very well be a leftover from Marvin Gaye’s Trouble Man soundtrack, while “Electric Montage” covers Kool & The Gang’s funkiest synths and bass with layers of grime. Must have! 3 Feet High and Rising is the debut studio album by hip hop trio De La Soul and was released on March 3, 1989 It marked the first of three full- length collaborations with producer Prince Paul, which would become the critical and commercial peak of both parties. Critically, as well as commercially, the album was a success. It contains the singles, "Me Myself and I", "The Magic Number", "Buddy", and "Eye Know". The album title came from the Johnny Cash song "Five Feet High and Rising". It is listed on Rolling Stone's 200 Essential Rock Records and The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. When Village Voice held its annual Pazz & Jop Critics Poll for 1989, 3 Feet High and Rising was ranked #1. It was also listed on the Rolling Stone's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Released amid the 1989 boom in gangsta rap, which gravitated towards hardcore, confrontational, violent lyrics, De La Soul's uniquely positive style made them an oddity beginning with the first single, "Me, Myself and I". Their positivity meant many observers labeled them a 'hippie' group, based on their declaration of the 'D.A.I.S.Y. Age' (Da. Inner. Soul. Yall). In discussions of the classic hip-hop era of the 1980s, frequently lost in the shuffle is the homegrown scene of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is unfortunate due to the wealth of talent the scene produced, including bona fide legends such as Schoolly D, Three Times Dope, Cash Money & Marvelous, and of course, the wildly successful DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. Frequently underrated is Tuff Crew, who were billed as "Philly's First Rap Supergroup", and consisted of a crew of ethnically diverse MCs and a DJ, who were regular performers of North Philly's famed After Midnight club, and who definitely represented a more hardcore rap style than some of their fellow Philly crews. Throughout the mid-to-late 1980s, Tuff Crew performed alongside some of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time, including Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, and 2 Live Crew, but never reached the heights of commercial success, despite landing various singles on the Billboard Rap charts. The peak of this success undoubtedly came with the release of their 1988 LP Danger Zone, which featured 10 tracks of classic 80s rap, including the Billboard-charting "My Part Of Town" (#23 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles charts). This album cemented Tuff Crew in the hip-hop history books as one of the dopest crews to ever come out of Philly, and unlike most late 80s rap albums, the lyrics and beats still bang hard in 2025.
