Get On Down in partnership with Sony's CERTIFIED is proud to present a recut deluxe 30th anniversary colored vinyl pressing of Resurrection that includes the original album plus 3 “Resurrection” remixes with liner notes by Check The Technique author Brian Coleman and featuring track-by-track commentary from Common and No I.D. all in a beautiful gatefold jacket with a commemorative wrap-around OBI.


Resurrection was released on Oct, 4, 1994. While the mainstream originally neglected the album, it has since received a great deal of critical acclaim and is now on The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. In comparison to his debut album, Common's musical style evolved lyrically by expressing himself rather than just describing street life. With its Jazz and Hip Hop flavors, Resurrection furthered the growth of both genres. Overall, the album is commonly perceived as an underrated Hip-Hop classic.


Resurrection was produced almost entirely by No I.D., who has gone on to work with heavyweights like Usher, Alicia Keys, and Killer Mike on his Grammy Winning album Michael.

DESCRIPTION
Karl Hector aka the German producer and guitarist JJ Whitefield, Whitefield is the visionary behind the Poets of Rhythm and the Whitefield Brothers, the ensembles whose rough analog sound and return to the funk archetypes of the late 60s to early 70s paved the way for labels like Daptone, Truth & Soul, Timmion. Whitefield, along with Thomas Myland and Zdenko Curlija, founded Karl Hector and The Malcouns in the early 2000s. Their debut, Sahara Swing, saw release on Now-Again in 2008. The album swung with influences from across the African diaspora and set the stage for a cult, but influential following. Festival promoters intrigued by the possibility of resurrecting the careers of once forgotten African mavericks from Ghana's Ebo Taylor to the progenitors of Zambia's Zamrock scene brought Hector and crew across Europe playing festivals for ecstatic fans. A grueling tour schedule made recording a follow up album to Sahara Swing quite the challenge, and as a result, the band opted to release limited edition, hand-silkscreened EP's, which continued to show their deft handling of musics from Eastern and Northern Africa alongside Western psychedelia, jazz and funk. Whitefield gave himself 2013 to finish the album that would become Unstraight Ahead, which will see release on Now-Again this summer. Unstraight Ahead finds the band exploring territories even outside of the expansive scope of Sahara Swing. On this album, the West African sounds of Ghana and Mali meet the East African sounds of Mulatu Astatke's Ethiopian jazz and are tied together with the groove heavy experimentalism of The Malcouns' 70s Krautrock godfathers: Can, of course, but also more obscure and equally adventurous groups like Agitation Free, Ibliss and Tomorrow's Gift. We look to Middle Eastern funk and psychedelic fusions, and to various ethnic records for sound and phrasing, Whitefield states. We're trying to combine the global experimentalism of Krautrock with the backbeat of funk. This explains how songs in uneven meters 5/4, 7/8 always sound so accessible and natural on Unstraight Ahead. It's mainly an instrumental affair, but guest artists appear throughout, from across the African diaspora to those from the worldly Krautrock forebears of their German fatherland: it's Marja, daughter of Embryo founder Christian Burchard, whose vocals open the album. It's an album out of time, one that couldn't have been made in the era its aural aesthetics reference, as its scope is so broad. But it's an album focused by funk and an ambition to expand funk's reaches. The Malcouns including Poets of Rhythm songwriter and vocalist Bo Baral - created their own instruments to fashion an album that stands alongside the great albums of its progenitors but charges Unstraight Ahead into a curious musical future.

The 90s were all about Hip-Hop groups. Brooklyn’s Junior M.A.F.I.A., consisting of mem- bers Lil’ Kim, Lil’ Cease, Trife, Larceny, Nino Brown, Chico Del Vec, MC Klepto, Capone, and Bugsy, formed under the guidance of The Notorious B.I.G. after he released his clas- sic debut album Ready To Die. At the end of the summer of 1995, Junior M.A.F.I.A. released their debut album Conspiracy on Big Beat Records featuring the lead single “Player’s Anthem” which featured Biggie and was produced by the late great DJ Clark Kent. Clark Kent produced three other songs including the second single “I Need You Tonight” featuring Biggie’s wife Faith Evans on the chorus. The third single, “Get Money”, another Biggie feature produced by EZ Elpee with it’s classic flip of the Roy Ayers Orduced Sylvia Striplin track “You Can’t Turn Me Away” was certified platinum. With eight members deep, it was difficult to stand out, but Lil’ Kim and Lil’ Cease would be the break- outr stars and go on to release solo albums. The third LP in Now Again's Memphis Rap series is Gotta Get My Pimp On. Lo-fi pimp player raps recorded on a four-track cassette in Shawty Pimp's bedroom in 1994.
This is part of Now Again Records multiple LP series on the History of Memphis Rap, which attempts to capture Memphis and its underground rap scene as it began to produce some of the most distinctive music of the ’90s.
This was a unique hip-hop strain – visceral and often vicious. It was a local, low-fi, cassette-tape based movement – yet it went on to change the course of rap music.
These albums have never been pressed on vinyl – until now. From Skinny Pimp and Carmike to Gangsta Blac and Shawty Pimp, these albums have been relegated to the proverbial bins of history and bootlegged, with unofficial copies still fetching top dollar on the secondary market. These albums were all licensed directly from their original creators, and come on limited edition colored vinyl with artist-approved imagery for their first LP iterations.
You can read the story of the Memphis Rap scene in a 12-page, oversized booklet with notes by Torii MacAdams. It captures the story of Memphis rap starting with the city’s founding and ending with an auto supply shop that sold these albums over the counter, with all points in between.

"Skinheads A Message To You" is a quintessential example of the Skinhead Reggae subgenre that emerged in the UK during the late 1960s. The track features a driving rhythm, with piano bursts and facetious vocals delivering a pressing message: “=Wear your boots but dont kick nobody, please be good and dont hurt nobody”. Fab! Its raw energy and authentic sound have made it a staple in Skinhead Reggae compilations and a top Boss Reggae anthem. The single is now super rare, highly collectible and very much in demand with original pressings commanding high prices on the vinyl market.
"If I Had Wings" was initially released as the B Side of Audrey’s "You'll Lose A Good Thing" and rightly so as it shares the exact same musical be it with very different lyrics. Riley’s comical lyrics being loosely taken from the traditional gospel "If I Had Wings Like A Dove". “Wings” is a fun and energetic tune that blends the rhythm of Rocksteady with the emerging rhythms of early Reggae. Riley's tongue-in-cheek vocals are set against a backdrop of guitar riffs, heavy bass and steady drum patterns with horns and flute bursts. In 1979, Record Player privately pressed and issued a solitary
45 on their Gem City Records imprint in Dayton, Ohio. Though they had recorded a host of other songs, and were on the verge of signing to a major label, their trajectory stalled and the band splintered by the early 1980s. In the early 2000s, Record Player principle Charles Jackson surfaced with their unreleased songs. Todate, only two Record Player songs have been reissued, as part of Now-Again's long-running Soul Cal series. Now, the entirety of their oeuvre is presented here as Free Your Mind, and their story detailed in words by Bret Sjerven. This is a special release for us at Now-Again, and will be perfect for any fan of the deep disco scene that birthed the likes of Luther Davis, Edge of Daybreak, Tomorrow's People, Split Decision Band, and so many others issued by us, Numero Group, and other like minded labels.

Too $hort claimed he was retiring in 1996 when he dropped album #10 Gettin' It, but a player like $hort couldn't stay away. After a three-year hiatus, he got back in the game and on July 11th, 1999, he dropped his 11th studio album aptly named Can't Stay Away. Too $hort had been living in Atlanta for several years and this would be the first of many albums to come that would incorporate ATL's southern influences alongside his West Coast Bay Area sound. Jazze Pha, Jermaine Dupri, and NY to ATL transplant funk lord Erick Sermon contributed to the production along with features by Memphis' 8Ball & MJG and Houston's Scarface. The Bay Area sound would come from Ant Banks and Quint Black with West Coast features by E-40, B-Legit, Daz, and Soopa Fly. The album would also introduce several up-and-coming rappers from all regions of the US dubbed Nation Riders who were signed to Too $hort's new label imprint $hort Records. Grind, You Don't Shine" had his phone blowing up in 2005 with the release of his major label debut Who is Mike Jones? on Asylum/Swisha House/Warner Records. Mike Jones started rapping in the early 2000s and he released a couple of independent albums on his own label Ice Age Entertainment before linking up with Michael "5000" Watts of Swisha House. He recorded the underground single "Still Tippin" with Texas contemporaries Paul Wall and Slim Thug, which appeared on the Swisha House compilation The Day Hell Broke Loose 2. The song, full of southern hip-hop slang and braggadocio, was an ode to the classic car culture in Houston, Texas, and could be heard bumpin' out the trunks of cars nationwide with its heavy bass and classical string loops. Before the release of Who Is Mike Jones? girls would ignore him, but after the release of "Still Tippin" they were all up on him, which led to the release of the single "Back Then" where he shouted out his real cell phone number that played a major part in the marketing and promotion of the album.You could call 281-330-8004 and get his voicemail and leave a message, but sometimes he would answer, which led to spreading the word of Mike Jones' debut album. "Back Then" was also a top-selling ringtone because (back then) you had to buy and download ringtones, unlike today. Mike truly went viral before going viral was even a thing. After dropping the two hit singles, Who Is Mike Jones? was released on April 19th, 2005, and would sell over a million copies that year, leading to certified platinum status. Twenty years later, this Texas Rap classic still holds up with features from other H-Town legends including S.U.C.'s Big Moe (RIP),Bun B, Paul Wall and Lil Keke. Juicy J & DJ Paul of Three 6 Mafia added their Memphis touch to the "Got It Sewed Up Remix" and the album ends with a heartfelt dedication to Mike Jones' late Grandmother on "Grandma". Lord Finesse brings back the rich, layered, and warm sounds of ‘90s hip-hop on his new instrumental album, The SP1200 Project: Sounds & Frequencies in Technicolor. Across the 17 tracks on here, the Bronx native delivers an undeniably potent dose of sample-flipping boom-bap that’s brimming with funk and soul.
Lord Finesse was inspired to put this project together after hearing how modern music tends to be so heavily compressed. “Sonically, a good amount of today’s hip-hop music sounds like it’s being played under a heavy quilt,” he explains. “What that means is certain frequencies are buried, and they can’t be felt or heard, destroying the vibe and energy of the production—no matter how good it is.”
As a result, he began to dig into his own crates to uncover gems that he could share with the world. While some of the tracks were produced for his own albums or for other artists, Finesse also found some never-before-heard instros. Those previously unreleased beats were intended for the likes of Big L and Grand Puba, among others, but they instead found a home in his digital stash—until now.
Sounds & Frequencies in Technicolor is truly a feast for hip-hop heads with its neck-snapping drums and chopped-up samples. From one track to the next, your ears are treated to nostalgia-tinged sounds from a variety of genres. “Symphonic Collective” could very well be a leftover from Marvin Gaye’s Trouble Man soundtrack, while “Electric Montage” covers Kool & The Gang’s funkiest synths and bass with layers of grime.
