DESCRIPTION

This is part of Now Again Records multiple LP series on the History of Memphis Rap, which attempts to capture Memphis and its underground rap scene as it began to pro- duce some of the most distinctive music of the 90s.
This was a unique hip-hop strain - visceral and often vicious. It was a local, low-fi, cas- sette-tape based movement - yet it went on to change the course of rap music. These albums have never been pressed on vinyl - until now. From Skinny Pimp and Car- mike to Gangsta Blac and Shawty Pimp, these albums have been relegated to the prover- bial bins of history and bootlegged, with unofficial copies still fetching top dollar on the secondary market. These albums were all licensed directly from their original creators, and come on limited edition colored vinyl with artist-approved imagery for their
first LP iterations.
You can read the story of the Memphis Rap scene in a 12-page, oversized booklet with notes by Torii MacAdams. It captures the story of Memphis rap starting with the city’s founding and ending with an auto supply shop that sold these albums over the counter, with all points in between.

Rakim is an American rapper best known as one half of the legendary rap duo Eric B. & Rakim.

Rakim is considered a transformative figure in hip hop for raising the bar for MC technique higher than it had ever been. Rakim helped to pioneer the use of internal rhymes and multisyllabic rhymes, and he was among the first to demonstrate the possibilities of sitting down to write ntricately crafted lyrics packed with clever word choices and metaphors rather than the more improvisational styles and simpler rhyme patterns that redominated before him.

Rakim is also credited with creating the overall shiftfrom the more simplistic old school flows to more complex flows. Rapper Kool Moe Dee explained that before Rakim the term 'flow' wasn't widely used – "Rakim is basically the inventor of flow.

We were not even using the word flow until Rakim came along. It was called rhyming, it was called cadence,
but it wasn't called flow. Rakim created flow!"

"Da Beatminerz defined the dark, gritty sound of underground Hip-Hop in the '90s. Formed in 1992 by brothers Walter “Mr. Walt” and Ewart “DJ Evil Dee” Dewgarde, the production duo pioneered Hip-Hop's brooding vibes, a tonal shift that came with the release of Black Moon's classic debut album Enta Da Stage. As producers of the seminal 1993 project in its entirety, Da Beatminerz set a precedent for hardcore Hip-Hop. Their sample-heavy, gutter tracks laced with heavy basslines, and hard kicks and snares helped reshape the music genre. Da Beatminerz continued to refine their distinct sound and identity with countless classic records for other artists and two albums of their own (2001’s Brace 4 Impak and 2004’s Fully Loaded w/ Statik) over the course of their illustrious 30-year career. Stifled Creativity is the duo’s first full-length album in 20 years. “We started working on this album in 2009... We had one focus and the focus was to stick to our core sound. Originally conceived, written, produced, and recorded by Paten himself in the mid 2010's, the rough collection of experimental/lo-fi-/underground/psychedelic rock & hip hop songs that would eventually become Americancer and Dance on My Grave were more or less finalized in 2017. Yes, Paten prophetically named his magnum opus a full 2 years before he was diagnosed with stage-4 cancer and was swiftly taken from us. It's almost as if his soul knew before his body did...and before he departed, he left us these instructions: 'DANCE ON MY GRAVE' About Paten Locke: The Boston-bred, Jacksonville, FL based triple threat, Paten Locke fka DJ Therapy burst onto the indie hip hop scene in the early 2000's with his critically acclaimed group, Asamov. He then went on to form the hip-hop jazz trio, The Smile Rays while also holding down DJ duties for The Perceptionists, simultaneously releasing his solo debut on Tres Records in 2009. In 2013, he co-founded FULL PLATE with Dillon Maurer where he would oversee and release multiple projects including his soul duo, Stono Echo. In the late 2010's, Paten joined forces with Edan and they toured the globe as one of the most beloved live rap shows in the industry. Paten Locke passed in August of 2019, but he was able to dictate his final wishes for his vast catalog of unreleased and unfinished music.

Originally conceived, written, produced, and recorded by Paten himself in the mid 2010's, the rough collection of experimental/lo-fi-/underground/psychedelic rock & hip hop songs that would eventually become Americancer and Dance on My Grave were more or less finalized in 2017. Yes, Paten prophetically named his magnum opus a full 2 years before he was diagnosed with stage-4 cancer and was swiftly taken from us. It's almost as if his soul knew before his body did...and before he departed, he left us these instructions: 'DANCE ON MY GRAVE' About Paten Locke: The Boston-bred, Jacksonville, FL based triple threat, Paten Locke fka DJ Therapy burst onto the indie hip hop scene in the early 2000's with his critically acclaimed group, Asamov. He then went on to form the hip-hop jazz trio, The Smile Rays while also holding down DJ duties for The Perceptionists, simultaneously releasing his solo debut on Tres Records in 2009. In 2013, he co-founded FULL PLATE with Dillon Maurer where he would oversee and release multiple projects including his soul duo, Stono Echo. In the late 2010's, Paten joined forces with Edan and they toured the globe as one of the most beloved live rap shows in the industry. Paten Locke passed in August of 2019, but he was able to dictate his final wishes for his vast catalog of unreleased and unfinished music.

When initially released in 1971, many critics panned Eddie Palmieri’s album Harlem River Drive. Those critics were wrong. Regardless of critical opinion, the release was not the crossover success Palmieri and Roulette Records had hoped for, at least in the immediate. Over the years the release has developed a following among listeners, DJs, and aficionados of rare-grooves.
The record may have been recorded towards the end of the Latin soul era, yet it features that genre's wonderful mix of Puerto Rican soul, Spanish Harlem Latin, and New York funk. Palmieri worked with an incredibly talented crew of Latin and R&B session musicians to create this quintessential New York vibe, a synthesis of funk and Afro-Cuban sounds. Contributors include Victor Venegas from Mongo Santamaria’s band, Palmieri’s brother Charlie, an accomplished musician in his own right, Bruce Fowler who went on to join Frank Zappa’s band, Dick Meza who went on to great things with Tito Puente, Ray Barretto and Celia Cruz, as well as Andy Gonzalez who’s pedigree includes recordings with Barretto, Johnny Pacheco, Willie Colon
and even Chico O’Farrill. Also appearing Randy Brecker and one of the all-time
greatest of the greats Bernard Purdy.
An over-arching theme of Harlem River Drive is the thought that, as Palmieri puts it “The U.S. is richest country, all this immense wealth, side by side with the most intense poverty, racial prejudice; how is that possible?” A question that’s perhaps more even more relevant today than it was in 1971. A question that can be further explored with Get On Down’s reissue of this seminal recording.

Norwegian producer Ole-Birger Neergård revisits 74: Out of Time with emotive ideations; new remixes featuring Fly Anakin, Pink Siifu, Gabe ‘Nandez, Quelle Chris, and other notables from the current vanguard of rap progressives. Weaving social and cultural themes throughout, this ambitious project is a corollary to the unrest and tension felt in 1974, a year of political disruption and disillusionment — not unlike our current state of affairs.
Neergård’s minimalistic approach contains multitudes, tracks with high levels of organization in its simplicity, with a jazz- anchored tapestry that also includes YUNGMORPHEOUS, lojii, and Tha God Fahim. On “Slippery,” a spiritually intimate profession, the enigmatic billy woods says: “I used to think the means justified the ends / I had it backwards, I made amends.”
This sense of numerology surrounding “74” underscores the project in other ways, specifically the sample palette, and a stark sense of activism, emphasized by songs titled,

In 2003 “The Soulkitchen Cookin’ Crew” started producing and recording their first album, creating original and so called „New Heavy Funk“ tunes, firstly in a very original raw soul style, just known from their 30 years ago founded 7“ label „Hot Pie & Candy Records“ they established for the legendary „Poets Of Rhythm“, the Munich band they signed in 1993.
Later adding more grown up well arranged and produced songs with a late 70ts feel.

Avis would see two releases in total, a Ray Sharp solo record (AVIS-1002) but more relative to our story, The Ebonys - Back In My Arms b/w I Can't Help But Love You (AVIS-1001). Recorded in 1968 and released in 1969 the record failed to chart, or maybe get radio play at all. This was the very first release for Clarence, David, James, and Jennifer as The Ebonys. Written and produced by Ray and arranged by the late, great Roland Chambers, the single seems to have long been forgotten. Perhaps it was overlooked, or overshadowed by the very successful career The Ebonys would go on to have at PIR, under Gamble & Huff. In 1971, The Ebonys' single You're The Reason Why was in the ten on the U.S. R&B Charts, a first for PIR. Fifty-five years later, after a seemingly endless effort by Raymond Waterhouse to relive some of that late 1960s glory with later bands like Waterhouse, Live A Little, Profit, The Four Accents, The Ebonys original reel-to-reel master tapes from the Avis label sessions have been found and remastered and sound as good today as they did back in 1969. In that original session for Ray at Sigma Sound Studios with Joe Tarsia doing the mix, there were three songs done in total, which will finally see a proper release on a 7" / 45rpm.

DESCRIPTION

Declaime also known as Dudley Perkins grew up living across the street from Madlib at around the age of eight and nine. They introduced themselves through a week long pop locking battle from across the street, it was Declaime against Madlib and his sister stacey. Once they became friends Madlib began to show Declaime his early beat tapes. He use to use pencils paper foil, pillows and his beatboxing skills which was far advanced back then. Decalime and his family moved and they lost contact for a short time. Declaime would run into Madlib every once in a while in the neighborhood grocery store where Madlib once worked. It wasnt until about 93-94 when Declaime's brother who was still classmates with Madlib aka Otis Jackson and some of the earlier crate diggas palace crew members introduced Decalime to Kankick who was in a group at that time with Otis, WildChild and DJ Romes, they were called the Lootpack. Other crew members were Kazi, Medaphoar, gods Gift, Gran Vanac, Nick Anderson, Abstract Wino and Roc C. Kankick was the leader of a crew called the Fonk Farm, CDP and The Farm were 2 crews in one. Madlib headed CDP. Tons of recordings were made by these two crews, many battles were fought to get any sort of recognition in the town of Oxnard. Madlib with the help of the crew, forged a new sound that soon was heard all around the world, to this day. Collection of tracks recorded from 93-96 at the Crate Diggas Palace in Oxnard California. Originaly pressed up on cassettes and dats, these tracks were lost for almost 25 years. Re-masterd by DJ Rhomes and available for the first time in all formats.

New York lyricists Nejma Nefertiti and Double A.B. team up with producer Dub Sonata for a conceptual project titled Animal Barz. Each song on the thematic album details the intricacies of a different animal. First conceived as a 5-track EP, the trio expanded the concept into a full length LP to portray creatures such as Elephants, Sharks, and Butterflies among others — each depicted in the cover artwork designed by Nadeneco. The lead single Pigeons reverently pays homage to T.O.N.Y., the timeless anthem by esteemed rap duo Capone-N-Noreaga, and utilizes the symbolic imagery of the pigeon — the unofficial mascot of New York City — to capture the essence of NYC Hip Hop and its cultural legacy. Craig Mack’s 1994 debut release Project: Funk Da World rocked the world when first released, primarily due to the powerful lead single “Flava In Your Ear” which was certified platinum by the RIAA. The full length also received a plaque when certified Gold within months of release – the second single from the record, “Get Down,”
also achieved gold status.
Unfortunately Mack’s success was overshadowed by label mate the Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready To Die which dropped just a week ahead of Project: Funk Da World. Spacing Out is an instrumental masterpiece only ever issued in Bermuda at the turn of 1970. A mix of the band's out-there original compositions and extravagant covers of The Meters, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin and The Isley Brothers, it established this band as one of the greatest instrumental bands of any genre, and helped kickstart the retro-soul/funk scenes that birthed the likes of Daptone and Big Crown Records. It's certainly a lodestar for Now-Again Records.
This reissue was done with the license and participation of the entire Invaders band, with their story told in great detail in an oversized booklet penned by Jefferson "Chairman" Mao, complete with rare photos of this rarely seen ensemble. From the proverbial stank face-inducing opening bars of reverb-drenched drums and congas that announce Spacing Out, you're thrust into something visceral and fleeting: a pocket universe in which technical excess, chemistry between players, and the uninhibited energy of youth align in a kind of glorious imperfection. Spacing Out is one of the greatest instrumental albums of its or any period in that unmistakably raw - as in honest - way only a crew of largely self-taught young uns could catch a groove.

Czarface and Stress Eater MC Esoteric followed up his proper debut solo album (2007’s Egoclapper) with this conceptual masterpiece, now available for the first time on vinyl!
This full-length is an audio drama based on a bizarre dream that Esoteric had sometime around 2006. As he describes it, “It was a crazy period in my life: I was engaged, in the process of finding a new home; I was starting my own label on a totally independent, self-financed level...I had a lot of stress and reserva- tions in my life. Celph Titled and I had just built my Pterolab studio, I had started to really produce and was really getting into it, making a ton of beats and had a ton of ideas. I guess all that stress and those feelings just manifested.” The results were what became Saving Seamus Ryan.
The album is broken into chapters rather than individual tracks and includes vocal contributions from the legendary and consummate Hip Hop theme-writer Masta Ace, K.Flay, Blacastan, Main Flow, and Qwill. Colorful characters from Eso’s childhood and subconscious also help along the journey (including a cameo by DJ Premier). Esoteric handles most of the production duties himself, but is also backed by career-long partner 7L.

In 1971, film producer David Gil and his business partners Robert S Sinn and Paul Frankenberg launched a film company called GSF. Over the next few years, it would be involved in a small number of productions. But, in 1971 the movie business was kind of old-hat, music was where it was at, and so GSF Records, a well-funded label, headed by Larry Newton was formed. Today Newton is largely remembered for his attempts to prevent Louis Armstrong from recording 'What A Wonderful World' but that didn’t stop him from growing ABC from a second division company to an industry leader. As he approached his 52nd birthday he was unveiled as GSF Records’ president a full-service music company, involved in records and publishing across all genres. Through a joint venture with drummer Bernard Purdie the label targeted the R&B charts and soul & funk dominated GSF's release schedule.
Black music ruled and this was reinforced by the hiring of Lloyd Price as head of A&R (veteran R&B star), and producers George Kerr (All-Platinum), Mickey Stevenson (Motown) and Jerry 'Swamp Dogg’ Williams. No wonder then, unintentional as it was, that GSF left behind such an extraordinary legacy of rare soul treasures.

Sammy Davis Jr was a singer, actor, comedian, dancer, TV host and noted amateur photographer. But, he is perhaps best remembered for his role in the iconic film Ocean’s 11 where he played a member of the Rat Pack alongside lifelong friends Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, a role that he lived in real life.
In 1969 he had a #11 Billboard hit with ‘I’ve Gotta Be Me’ after which he signed to the mighty Motown Records in order to reach a younger audience.
The album was released internationally in 1970 and showcased Davis at his smokin’ best covering ‘Spinning Wheel’ and ‘Wichita Lineman’ with his trademark brassy tenor. At the time Davis was a top-draw act in Las Vegas alongside Elvis with whom he developed a close relationship. He appeared in Presley’s concert film That’s The Way It Is and included a superb version of ‘In The Ghetto’ on the album. The set also includes the Motown classics ‘For Once In My Life’, popularised by Stevie Wonder’, and ‘You’ve Made Me So Very Happy’ by Brenda Holloway, co-written by the Holloway sisters and Frank “Do I Love You” Wilson.
Sammy Davis Jr was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement and his legacy lives on through his screen performances and his prolific recorded output.

Hailing from Venezuela, Los Impala, as they were originally known, signed to the Velvet label (originally based in Cuba) in 1964. They were highly regarded musicians and released a handful of collectable albums before making the move to Spain chasing international success. They released the eponymous Los Impala for the Marfer label out of Madrid in 1968 which caught the attention of Audiofidelity Enterprises in New York and a one-album deal.
A name change, to the more contemporary sounding Impala Syndrome, resulted in their self-titled masterpiece released on the Audiofidelity subsidiary Parallax in ’69. The acid-trip cover painted by Stephanie Altman sets the mood for this awe-inspiring slice of hard-rocking psychedelia that borrows the best of Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone and the Beatles and fuses it into the wholly original South American sound of the Impala Syndrome.

Inspired by the smash hit “Sugar Sugar”, by the cartoon pop band The Archies, CBS TV were only too keen to sign-up Don Kirshner’s Globetrotters recordings as the soundtrack to the all-new Saturday morning Harlem Globe Trotters cartoon series that ran from 1971-72.
The TV series – the album and companion singles – were a huge commercial success and 22 episodes were produced by Hanna-Barbera. It was the first Saturday morning show to feature an African-American cast and the soundtrack was suitably soulful, upbeat and funky. One of the main writers, James Ralph Bailey, was a former member of the Cadillacs and famed for penning songs for Main Ingredient and Isaac Hayes. Bailey is also none other than Chuck Wood, writer and singer, of the Northern Soul anthem “Seven Days Too Long”.
With guest vocals by Globetrotter legend Meadowlark Lemon this exclusive vinyl reissue will certainly set the ball rollin’!

“Libre – Free” is the now legendary second album by the short-lived Brooklyn Sounds and is arguably even better than their self-titled debut, displaying a more mature and practiced sound, no doubt honed by their experiences playing more gigs in support of their first record.
Brooklyn Sounds were one of a handful of garage salsa bands from the independent scene that was gathering steam in the early 1970s in the New York boroughs, despite little support or exposure in the mainstream Latin music industry from more dominant labels like Fania, Mericana, Cotique and Alegre. As with many others, Brooklyn Sounds briefly fluoresced in a burst of creativity and defiance, yet flamed out shortly thereafter, dying like a flower among the ruins of burned-out apartment blocks in the barrios of its home city.
Though the band only cut two LPs and a couple singles in their brief half-decade of existence, and never really broke out of the cuchifrito circuit in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, their music gradually spread far and wide, eventually becoming a sought-after global commodity by the late 1990s.
In contrast to the first album “Libre – Free” is uptempo and ebullient, with fewer slow songs and more confident, creative arrangements, full of heavy Nuyorican underground salsa dura propelled by raw trombones, off-kilter piano and in-your-face percussion. Standout tracks include the uplifting, anthemic ‘Libre soy’, and ‘Ha llegado el momento’, with its minor key ‘Moliendo café’ quote at the beginning—both of which have become dance floor anthems over the years. Another mid-tempo killer is ‘Guaguancó tropical’, a favorite in Colombia since the 1970s.

Often, the most prized records by collectors hold unexpected stories. When they also feature incredibly high musical quality and only a few original copies are available, they become the holy grails of collecting. This is the case with this album, recorded by American soldiers stationed in Germany in the early 70s.
During the Vietnam War, the U.S. Army organized a band competition among its soldiers. The winners would record a promotional album that would be distributed for free to encourage enlistment during such a turbulent time. The result was a double LP shared between the bands SOAP and East of Underground.
Although East of Underground's repertoire consists of covers of soul and funk hits, the quality is surprisingly high: raw guitars, crushing drums, brilliant vocal harmonies... The result perfectly captures the spirit of young America through songs written by Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Funkadelic, and Burt Bacharach (via Isaac Hayes, of course). High-level soul and funk performed by anonymous musicians whose final fate has yet to be confirmed. When the label Now Again tried to reconstruct the story of East of Underground, they only managed to contact one of its members after digging through documents in the New York Library and collaborating with the U.S. Army.

On October 7, 1974, the now-historic “Gusano mecánico” was released — the only full-length album by the legendary Bolivian rock band Climax. Founded in 1968 from the remnants of the disbanded Los Black Byrds and the unrealized project The Turtles, Climax was formed by guitarist José “Pepe” Eguino and bassist Javier Saldías, who developed a strong bond with drummer Álvaro Córdova, cemented by their shared passion for rock. Together, they embarked on a journey of self-discovery, spending several months in the United States during a crucial period straddling the end of the Summer of Love and the lead-up to Woodstock.
This period, perhaps the most significant of the 1960s countercultural movement, saw an explosion of artistic expression driven by dissatisfaction with the society that the youth had inherited from their parents. Within this context, the influence of iconic bands such as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Blue Cheer, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer played a pivotal role in their decision to return to Bolivia and form the country's first ‘power trio’. Their first EPs paid tribute to their musical heroes.
They quite literally brought psychedelic and prog rock to Bolivia by carrying new, experimental vinyl records in their luggage, at a time when rock music (and music in general) had very limited exposure due to the scarcity of media resources. Their musical project reflected their influences and laid down the first traces of what would later be called heavy rock, a genre that never achieved widespread popularity in Bolivia.

Climax embarked on a prog rock journey, exploring themes such as the loss of personal essence and the vindication of indigenous peoples. Their rebellious discourse opposed the mechanization of humankind brought about by past decades of industrial exploitation in which they resist being absorbed by the system. It became a landmark of prog rock in Bolivia and one of the few conceptual albums produced in the country.
Over time, Climax’s music has gained cult status among prog rock fans. Their album became a coveted collector’s item, highly valued by music lovers worldwide. It was even included in 5001 Record Collector Dreams by Hans Pokora, receiving the highest rarity rating and hailed as a musical masterpiece. Only two South American albums received this distinction.

Ruben Rada played a pivotal role in the development of Uruguayan music. By blending Afro-Uruguayan traditions with rock, soul, jazz, and funk, he paved a new musical path that began in the 1960s and continues to evolve today. Throughout his career, he has consistently been surrounded by talented musicians who have been integral to his sound. This was especially true with Daniel “Lobito” Lagarde, bassist and founding member of the iconic band Totem in the early 1970s; Ricardo Nolé, keyboardist, arranger, and musical director of Rada’s band in Argentina during the 1980s; and Nelson Cedréz, the drummer who has been by Rada’s side since the 1990s. In 2016, these three musicians reunited to form Rada’s Old Boys, releasing an album of jazz-infused reinterpretations of Rada’s songs that earned rave reviews. Now, they return with Manos, a bold new album that reimagines Rada’s works from every phase of his career, featuring deeply personal renditions and a special guest appearance from Rada himself on one track.

Raúl Llerena, aka Ranil, was one of the central figures of the Amazonian music scene. Based in Iquitos, he founded his own record label –Producciones Llerena– and shaped what is now known as the psychedelic sound of Amazonian cumbia.
The few LPs and 45s released on his label are legendarily hard to find, let alone the condition… Some of them were issued under the name Ranil y su Conjunto Tropical. They recorded this hypnotic and percussive version of ‘Sonido amazónico’ that was released as an LP-only track.
We're now pleased to release it for the first time as a 45, to the delight of DJs and 7”s collectors.
On the flipside we find Los Wembler’s de Iquitos, responsible for some of the most popular songs of the psychedelic cumbia genre, including the outstanding ‘Sonido Amazónico’.

Compiled by Bob Stanley to document the acid folk scene, “Gather In The Mushrooms” was first issued in 2004 on Sanctuary as a CD-only release; it proved popular enough for a sequel entitled “Early Morning Hush” two years later.
This new edition of “Gather In The Mushrooms” contains the cream of both long-deleted compilations with a few additions – COB, Roy Harper, Fotheringay – that weren’t available to Sanctuary at the time. Though they aren’t traditional, these songs have an authenticity of their own, an autumnal atmosphere and a naivety which proved influential in the 00s neo-folk boom (Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Alasdair Roberts, Tunng et al) but impossible to replicate. For many of these acts at the end of the 60s, folk music and the hippy world that surrounded them was a way of life, a way of opting out from the Vietnam war, Angry Brigade and three-day-week early 70s. Anne Briggs lived in a caravan in Suffolk, Shelagh McDonald lived in a tent, Vashti Bunyan eschewed electricity; they weren’t part-timers. Listening to “Gather In The Mushrooms”, we are transported to a time when no one used the term post-modernist.
It may not have resonated with dyed-in-the wool political folkies, but over five decades later this music sounds very evocative of an England of yore – not necessarily one of poachers and pedlars, but one of long-haired youths in tie-dye T-shirts, bikers and hippies, acoustic guitars played in white stone cottages. Groups like Stone Angel (Bonus Track), Midwinter and Oberon made primitive, privately recorded folk albums; today they sound as distant and mystical as the field recordings of Alan Lomax. The sincerity and folk knowledge of a group like Forest becomes irrelevant once you hear something as eerie and evocative as ‘Graveyard’. Home-made, homely, warm as soup or chilling as a hoar frost, this is music of innocence and rare beauty.

The wonderfully favourable response to our first CD and double vinyl volume of the original A and B sides of the singles of the late great Isaac Hayes – as originally released on Stax’ Enterprise subsidiary between 1969 and 1972 – has forced us to bring forward, this month, the release of “Hot Buttered Singles 2” to cater for what Ace is sure will be just as great a level of popular demand.
This volume picks up where “Hot Buttered Singles Vol 1” left off with Hayes’ final 45 of 1972, and carries his seven inch story through to 1976 – by which time Stax was defunct, and Hayes’ was on his own Hot Buttered Soul label via ABC Records. It features eight US R&B chart hits including the much sampled ‘Hung Up On My Baby’ and ‘Chocolate Chip’, Hayes’ biggest hit of this period ‘Joy’ and the ever-popular 1976 instrumental ‘Disco Connection’, which finally gave Hayes’ his second UK Top 20 hit after ‘Shaft’.
All tracks match the original single edits, and wherever possible are taken from digital transfers of the original Enterprise singles masters. Where the original 45s came in two parts, they also do so here. And where original singles masters no longer exist, as was the case for two tracks, Ace’s engineers have re-created them beat for beat from the longer album versions. (Have fun guessing which two they were…)
As with “Hot Buttered Singles Vol 1”, the LP inners and CD booklet are packed with label shots, copious other images and an extensive sleeve note that gives deep detail about the featured songs. It also makes the package look as good as it sounds.

"Belly Lick" was originally released in 1968 on the Blue Cat label. "Belly Lick" is a wicked, fast-paced track that fuses early Reggae with the infectious drive of Mento. The call-and-response vocals and raw, party-like intensity make this track a standout piece of vintage Jamaican fire and a great nod to Jamaica’s traditional folk music roots. The track's quality and rarity has made it a very coveted item among Reggae vinyl collectors.
The party continues with the energetic and wild "Game Song", a wicked instrumental track difficult to describe. Its relentless pace and goofy but intricated orchestral madness suggest the soundtracks for a black and white animated cartoon from the 30s but in a Jamaican way! It is a perfect B Side for the outstanding "Belly Lick" especially considering that "The Game Song" was also written by Dennis Walks. Sadly it was the only known collaboration between Dennis Walks and Drumbago due to Drumbago untimely death in 1969.

"Haunted House" was originally released in 1970 on the Upsetter label in Jamaica and later on Trojan Records in the UK. Originally composed as "Spinning Wheel" by David Clayton-Thomas, "Haunted House" transforms the brilliant but weird psych soul jazz funk hit into an even weirder reggae instrumental, driven by syncopated rolling basslines and hypnotic skanking groove. The track is a wicked Upsetters’ production, blending haunting elements with a driving reggae rhythm.
"Double Wheel" was released as a B Side to “Haunted House” on the original single and serves as a perfect complement to the A Side. Like "Haunted House," "Double Wheel" is an instrumental adaptation of the song "Spinning Wheel” similar to the A Side but featuring a mesmerizing organ.
Both tracks are prime examples of Lee Perry’s early work before he fully transitioned into the deep, psychedelic dub that would define his later years. This reissue brings these wicked gems back to light, allowing a new generation of Reggae enthusiasts to experience their brilliance.

Zamrock was a bona-fide rock scene: on the African continent, only Nigeria can claim one so comprehensive, and Nigeria's was largely catalyzed and funded by subsidiaries of the European major labels. Zamrock was as independent as its newly-named country, formerly known as Northern Rhodesia.
Zamrock is startling in its completeness, especially for a scene that emerged, unfurled, and disappeared so quickly. From Musi-O-Tunya's fusion of Fela's Afro-beat, Hendrix's rock, South African jazz and traditional Zambian melodies and rhythms to Salty Dog's acid folk/rock, Zambia's rock scene contained all of rock's subgenres.
Zamrock was much more than an imitation of American and European rock music: it quickly became a uniquely Zambian movement, befitting of its name. WITCH, Paul Ngozi and Amanaz sound nothing like other rock music from the African continent - or elsewhere.
Zamrock came from a nation's youth carrying forth the momentum of a political and social revolution with a musical revolution that maintained the fiery power of early rock - in the mid-to late-'70s. From that era, Zamrock's energy is matched only by the punk and hip hop scenes of England and America.
