Craig Mack’s 1994 debut release Project: Funk Da World rocked the world when first released, primarily due to the powerful lead single “Flava In Your Ear” which was certified platinum by the RIAA. The full length also received a plaque when certified Gold within months of release – the second single from the record, “Get Down,”
also achieved gold status.
Unfortunately Mack’s success was overshadowed by label mate the Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready To Die which dropped just a week ahead of Project: Funk Da World. Just in time for the 25th anniversary release of Cali Agents’ debut LP, How The West Was One, Coalmine Reissues in partnership with Pockets Linted Entertainment is pleased to announce their special edition reissue. This pressing marks just the second time the album’s ever been repressed, over 21 years removed from the alternate cover edition circa 2003.

Originally released in April of 2003, the album is a masterclass in Southern hip-hop that artfully balances lyricism, storytelling, and soulful production. The trio—consisting of Deacon the Villain, Kno, and at the time Mr. SOS—carves a niche in the Southern rap landscape with a sound that's deeply rooted in the region's musical traditions while pushing the boundaries of the genre. Joey Pastrana had a special gift for singing songs in both English and Spanish. Along with other boogaloo luminaries like Pete Rodriguez and Joe Cuba; Joey Pastrana was responsible for introducing Latin music to many English speakers across America. With a wonderful and talented orchestra, Joey Pastrana paved the way for the new Latin music fusions that have come to be known as the Latin boogaloo. A master of the timbales, Pastrana was also a brilliant singer known internationally for his energizing live performances. Honing his musical skills in his beloved New York City, Joey was enamored at an early age by the sights and sounds coming out of Spanish Harlem during the early sixties. Taking his cue from the R&B and Jazz that was popular at that time, Pastrana became a master of rolling rhythms that shook up hips in dance floors throughout the world. One of the top artists of the boogaloo/Latin soul era, Joey Pastrana s music is regarded as one the most wonderful and exquisite examples of the world-famous New York Latin sound.

“Zambia's Zamrock movement that exploded in the 1970s ... provided young musicians access to European and American music, and created a unique sound. At its root, Zamrock melded fuzz-toned psychedelia, chugging garage rock and roiling funk with a broad mix of African cadences and beats.... enlivening a scene that included bands like Musi O Tunya, Amanaz and the Ngozi Family.” — The New York Times
Zamrock was a bona-fide rock scene, with albums released through independent labels based in Zambia. This music scene was complete, encompassing the genres of rock, acid folk, fusion, Afro-beat, South African jazz and traditional Zambian melodies. It quickly became a uniquely Zambian movement, befitting of its name. WITCH, Paul Ngozi and Amanaz sound nothing like other rock music from the African continent or elsewhere. 
Now-Again has been reissuing the essential records from the Zamrock scene since 2010. Heavy Connection (1978) is part of an extensive campaign centered around Paul Ngozi and his band.

Compiled by Bob Stanley to document the acid folk scene, “Gather In The Mushrooms” was first issued in 2004 on Sanctuary as a CD-only release; it proved popular enough for a sequel entitled “Early Morning Hush” two years later.
This new edition of “Gather In The Mushrooms” contains the cream of both long-deleted compilations with a few additions – COB, Roy Harper, Fotheringay – that weren’t available to Sanctuary at the time. Though they aren’t traditional, these songs have an authenticity of their own, an autumnal atmosphere and a naivety which proved influential in the 00s neo-folk boom (Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Alasdair Roberts, Tunng et al) but impossible to replicate. For many of these acts at the end of the 60s, folk music and the hippy world that surrounded them was a way of life, a way of opting out from the Vietnam war, Angry Brigade and three-day-week early 70s. Anne Briggs lived in a caravan in Suffolk, Shelagh McDonald lived in a tent, Vashti Bunyan eschewed electricity; they weren’t part-timers. Listening to “Gather In The Mushrooms”, we are transported to a time when no one used the term post-modernist.
It may not have resonated with dyed-in-the wool political folkies, but over five decades later this music sounds very evocative of an England of yore – not necessarily one of poachers and pedlars, but one of long-haired youths in tie-dye T-shirts, bikers and hippies, acoustic guitars played in white stone cottages. Groups like Stone Angel (Bonus Track), Midwinter and Oberon made primitive, privately recorded folk albums; today they sound as distant and mystical as the field recordings of Alan Lomax. The sincerity and folk knowledge of a group like Forest becomes irrelevant once you hear something as eerie and evocative as ‘Graveyard’. Home-made, homely, warm as soup or chilling as a hoar frost, this is music of innocence and rare beauty.

The wonderfully favourable response to our first CD and double vinyl volume of the original A and B sides of the singles of the late great Isaac Hayes – as originally released on Stax’ Enterprise subsidiary between 1969 and 1972 – has forced us to bring forward, this month, the release of “Hot Buttered Singles 2” to cater for what Ace is sure will be just as great a level of popular demand.
This volume picks up where “Hot Buttered Singles Vol 1” left off with Hayes’ final 45 of 1972, and carries his seven inch story through to 1976 – by which time Stax was defunct, and Hayes’ was on his own Hot Buttered Soul label via ABC Records. It features eight US R&B chart hits including the much sampled ‘Hung Up On My Baby’ and ‘Chocolate Chip’, Hayes’ biggest hit of this period ‘Joy’ and the ever-popular 1976 instrumental ‘Disco Connection’, which finally gave Hayes’ his second UK Top 20 hit after ‘Shaft’.
All tracks match the original single edits, and wherever possible are taken from digital transfers of the original Enterprise singles masters. Where the original 45s came in two parts, they also do so here. And where original singles masters no longer exist, as was the case for two tracks, Ace’s engineers have re-created them beat for beat from the longer album versions. (Have fun guessing which two they were…)
As with “Hot Buttered Singles Vol 1”, the LP inners and CD booklet are packed with label shots, copious other images and an extensive sleeve note that gives deep detail about the featured songs. It also makes the package look as good as it sounds.
