Lonnie Liston Smith's "Expansions" is one of the most influential records ever to have been released with its sound ricocheting through many different music scenes. It is one of dance music's fundamental building blocks, and an anthem to UK clubland.
Now for its 50th Anniversary we are celebrating that influence by an ultra-high quality deluxe vinyl edition of the album. Using the original album master tape we decamped to Frank Merritt's East London studio, the Carvery, for an all Analogue cut of the album - it has never sounded better!
We have housed this in a tip-on a laminated gatefold sleeve, which has allows Jack Martin's original painting of Lonnie to shine as never before. We have also a fully illustrated sleeve note by Frank Tope, telling the story of how the record took its journey through the universe from its spiritual jazz route to become a clubland anthem. This story is told with help from Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay and more.
The album as a whole is essential, going beyond the dance-ability of the title track, through its seven tracks to be one of the great jazz albums of the 70s. Produced by Lonnie and Bob Thiele (producer of Gil Scott-Heron's “Pieces Of A Man” and John Coltrane's “A Love Supreme”) it should be in every record collection.

DESCRIPTION
Soul music has always been in Paul Weller’s blood from early Jam covers of Martha & the Vandellas 1963 classic ‘Heatwave’. Along with other forms of music, soul found its way into Paul’s record collection, nourishing his ears and informing his own songwriting.
We don’t need to recap a questing musical career from the Jam to the Style Council which then blossomed into one of the most productive and revered careers of any UK solo artist. Paul has written anthems, standards and a songbook that have always developed from his own feelings.
Whilst Paul has talked about his love of soul music he has, before now, simply been too busy to sit down and curate a collection of his favourite tracks and get it into the record racks.
Ace Records are honoured and delighted to finally release that Paul Weller curated collection which he has aptly titled, “That Sweet Sweet Music”.
This 2-LP set and CD open the curtains on 26 tracks that are some of Paul’s favourite soul records most of which nestle on vinyl in his own collection. He can still recall paying £70 for his copy of Jon Lucien’s 1971 ‘Search For The Inner Self’ 7” at a record shop in Leicester in the 90s. Some of these tracks are soul classics like James Carr’s 1966 ‘Pouring Water On A Drowning Man’ and Brother to Brother's brilliant take on Gil Scott Heron and Brian Jackson’s ‘In The Bottle’ from 1975. Others are deliciously obscure wonderous gems like the A-side of Blackrock’s sole 1971 single ‘Blackrock “Yeah, Yeah”’, ‘Life Walked Out’ from the same year by The Mist or Syl Johnson’s ‘Black Balloons’ taken from his 1970 album “Is It Because I’m Black?”.
There are plenty of big vocal hitters such as Darrell Banks, Spinners, Joe Simon, O.C. Smith, the Dells and Betty Davis. Whilst the core is vocal soul the music does branch out with Paul selecting a wicked instrumental from the flipside of the Isley Brothers’ ‘Twist & Shout’ from 1962 and the funky jazz of the Headhunters ‘God Made Me Funky’, the A-side of their first 1975 seven-inch.
Paul has not only written an introduction but the way he has curated the music allows each side of the vinyl and the CD to flow like a river taking the listener on a journey through some of his favourite music.
It’s a Sweet Sweet collection indeed.

DESCRIPTION
The stomping intro to Larry Atkins’ ‘Ain’t That Love Enough’ leads into an excellent soul song by R&B stalwart Kent Harris. Hs mid-60s soul productions were as good as they come.
The pairing repeated the formula on ‘Lighten Up’ a backing track that Kent also used on his partner Ty Karim’s ‘Lighten Up Baby’. Both sides here are recognised as Northern Soul classics.

DESCRIPTION
Hank Jacobs was an accomplished West coast keyboard player who had an instrumental hit with ‘So Far Away’ in 1964. He became a Los Angeles session man who worked on many recording sessions with arranger Arthur Wright with whom he had four releases on Alton Scott’s Call Me label. The uber-cool ‘East Side’ with its mid-tempo groove was initially his best-known track, having been appreciated by the Lowrider and Popcorn scenes since its release.
The flip ‘Elijah Rockin’ With Soul’ was the one for the UK soul scene though. Its urgent beat was perfect for Northern Soul dancefloors and was augmented by the cream of LA’s musicians.

DECRIPTION
Regarded as the epitome of Northern Soul by many aficionados, ‘I’m Gone’, by Detroit’s Eddie Parker, captures the adrenalin and anger of a busted relationship and he tells of his determination to start again - elsewhere. The pulsating rhythm matches that anger and producer Jack Ashford, one of Motown’s key Funk Brothers, utilises his percussive know-how to produce such a vital track.
The flip ‘Crying Clown’ is musically and thematically miles away - with heartbreak and sorrow to the fore over a beautiful ballad backing. These are two of the greatest soul recordings from the 1960s.

DESCRIPTION
Songwriter / producer Larry Banks worked a lot with girl groups in the late 60s, particularly for GWP productions. The Geminis and Exciters tracks he produced were issued on the RCA imprint… but the equally good Devonnes recordings failed to make it to wax. Kent accessed the master tapes some twenty years ago and released all four of their performperformances. The catchy dancer ‘Doin’ “The Gittin’ Up”’ first came out on a 100 Club anniversary 45 in 2005 and has been in demand ever since.
‘(You’d Better) Straighten Up And Fly Right’ was issued on CD in the same year, but has never made it to vinyl until now. The song was recorded by Terri Bryant on Verve in 1967 and is highly regarded; this new coupling will be a popular choice.

DESCRIPTION
‘Search For The Inner Self’, Jon Lucien’s 1971 ethereal, soul masterpiece has gained admirers costantly since its 1971 release. The Beau Ray Fleming production, ingeniously arranged by Horace Ott in New York, kick-started a successful career of sensuous soul songs that saw him write and record more than a dozen albums from the 70s to the noughties.
‘We’ve Got Love’ is more of an “old school” 60s soul dancer, recorded around the same time, that was not heard until a self-released CD in 1999. It has remained under the radar to all but a few of the cognoscenti. This vinyl debut will earn it many more fans.

DESCRIPTION
Eramus Hall formed in the late 70s and, christened by Funkadelic’s George Clinton, signed to Westbound Records. They released their first single - ‘Do The Rock/Think Positively’ – in 1979 and - ‘She Shined A Light/Stuck In The Mudd’ – in 1980.

Their debut album was also released in 1980 and served up a sublime blend of soul shot through with elements of P-Funk. Only waxed in America, the album sold poorly, but over time it has been hailed as a classic with original copies sought after by collectors worldwide and now sell for hundreds of pounds. For the record, a second album “Gohead” followed in 1984 on Capitol.

Although Ace have reissued “Eramus Hall” in the past this edition has long sold out. Now, this new remastered edition replicates the original US 1980 pressing with yellow Westbound labels and the original lyric inner sheet.

GROWING PAINS is my first attempt ever at a somewhat conceptual and full project . It’s my first sonic art piece. I did three versions of the demos before coming to something I was happy with. The cover art and its distortion is to represent the confusion, fear, anxiety, depression and mess it is of me finding myself on this new music/life journey and the death of an older version of me. In the music there’s a lot of references to spirituality, my frustration with the youth and my people, & self empowerment lines/verses. GROWING PAINS is an extension of me and if you’re a thinker who lives life through questions and concerns...this poetry is for you. Thanks to johnboybeats for engineering the bulk of the tape and producing “Black Petunia” and Sean for his little contribution on songs like “Woo-SAH”. The three talked about doing a song. The song was cut; sadly, it never saw the light of day. Fast forward to the pandemic, the three had managed to keep in touch over the years and casually spoke about making music. Those casual conversations evolved into the musical journey that is "A Galactic Love Supreme." Every song a different painting, the canvas at its core is hip-hop; however, the album is meticulously textured with so many other influences from jazz to soul music. It is a healthy marriage of analog and digital; nostalgia meets contemporary. Boom bap cuts and soulified melodies, lyrically thoughtful and sincere in the production, interspersed with musical guests from actress/singer Michole White to Doodlebug's partner in rhyme, Butterfly, and the Empire's friends, Bone Crusher and Kxng Crooked, among many others. When the late Jazz impresario and trailblazer Meghan Stabile first launched the Revivalist platform and Revive Da Live concert series in NYC, the goal was to bridge the gap between younger Hip-Hop audiences and traditional Jazz purists.
