DESCRIPTION

The psych-funk genre is as precious as it is spectacular. Headed by black bands that were playing R&B and did abrupt turns either as they heard Hendrix or dropped acid themselves, the genre was like a shooting star: brilliant in its prime, but destined to fade. Tuff City's Funky Delicacies label has profiled full albums by world class practitioners of this genre--Black Merda and Fugi--and we can be forgiven if Bobby Franklin's Insanity covers some of the more R&B and danceable music he made after his tenure as a psych funker ended. But for the substantial amount of psych-funk music here, some of which is produced by the legendary Curtis Mayfield, this album is precious.
