In 1971, film producer David Gil and his business partners Robert S Sinn and Paul Frankenberg launched a film company called GSF. Over the next few years, it would be involved in a small number of productions. But, in 1971 the movie business was kind of old-hat, music was where it was at, and so GSF Records, a well-funded label, headed by Larry Newton was formed. Today Newton is largely remembered for his attempts to prevent Louis Armstrong from recording 'What A Wonderful World' but that didn’t stop him from growing ABC from a second division company to an industry leader. As he approached his 52nd birthday he was unveiled as GSF Records’ president a full-service music company, involved in records and publishing across all genres. Through a joint venture with drummer Bernard Purdie the label targeted the R&B charts and soul & funk dominated GSF's release schedule.
Black music ruled and this was reinforced by the hiring of Lloyd Price as head of A&R (veteran R&B star), and producers George Kerr (All-Platinum), Mickey Stevenson (Motown) and Jerry 'Swamp Dogg’ Williams. No wonder then, unintentional as it was, that GSF left behind such an extraordinary legacy of rare soul treasures.

Chic’s Nile Rogers is lauded as an international star and the recently departed Patrick Adams is acknowledged as one of the most important pioneers of disco music, but behind them were an army of lesser-known musicians, producers, and arrangers including one of the founding-fathers of New York Dance, the enigma Lonnie Johnson.
Scorpgemi Records and Lonnie Johnson, the man behind the label, will be unknown to most, but he was an important figure at the birth of dance music. His label featured work by several leading voices of the New York scene and provided one of New York’s most instantly recognisable dance music records— “Keep In Touch (Body To Body)”—one of the greatest club cuts ever.. But Johnson himself leaves hardly a trace, a behind-the-scenes person, and a friend of Patrick Adams who is only known to those who study the small print on record labels.
So, Lonnie Joel Johnson proves to be both highly influential, and almost completely elusive. A backroom person, who created an anthem across the Atlantic from his home base in New York. A man who was instrumental in the development of Patrick Adams’ career from producer of vocal groups to the go-to producer for dancefloor gold. Yet, for all this there are no biographical details, no interviews and almost nothing left behind except for a small but fantastic catalogue of music.

Sammy Davis Jr was a singer, actor, comedian, dancer, TV host and noted amateur photographer. But, he is perhaps best remembered for his role in the iconic film Ocean’s 11 where he played a member of the Rat Pack alongside lifelong friends Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, a role that he lived in real life.
In 1969 he had a #11 Billboard hit with ‘I’ve Gotta Be Me’ after which he signed to the mighty Motown Records in order to reach a younger audience.
The album was released internationally in 1970 and showcased Davis at his smokin’ best covering ‘Spinning Wheel’ and ‘Wichita Lineman’ with his trademark brassy tenor. At the time Davis was a top-draw act in Las Vegas alongside Elvis with whom he developed a close relationship. He appeared in Presley’s concert film That’s The Way It Is and included a superb version of ‘In The Ghetto’ on the album. The set also includes the Motown classics ‘For Once In My Life’, popularised by Stevie Wonder’, and ‘You’ve Made Me So Very Happy’ by Brenda Holloway, co-written by the Holloway sisters and Frank “Do I Love You” Wilson.
Sammy Davis Jr was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement and his legacy lives on through his screen performances and his prolific recorded output.

DESCRIPTION
Hailing from Venezuela, Los Impala, as they were originally known, signed to the Velvet label (originally based in Cuba) in 1964. They were highly regarded musicians and released a handful of collectable albums before making the move to Spain chasing international success. They released the eponymous Los Impala for the Marfer label out of Madrid in 1968 which caught the attention of Audiofidelity Enterprises in New York and a one-album deal.
A name change, to the more contemporary sounding Impala Syndrome, resulted in their self-titled masterpiece released on the Audiofidelity subsidiary Parallax in ’69. The acid-trip cover painted by Stephanie Altman sets the mood for this awe-inspiring slice of hard-rocking psychedelia that borrows the best of Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone and the Beatles and fuses it into the wholly original South American sound of the Impala Syndrome.

DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the smash hit “Sugar Sugar”, by the cartoon pop band The Archies, CBS TV were only too keen to sign-up Don Kirshner’s Globetrotters recordings as the soundtrack to the all-new Saturday morning Harlem Globe Trotters cartoon series that ran from 1971-72.
The TV series – the album and companion singles – were a huge commercial success and 22 episodes were produced by Hanna-Barbera. It was the first Saturday morning show to feature an African-American cast and the soundtrack was suitably soulful, upbeat and funky. One of the main writers, James Ralph Bailey, was a former member of the Cadillacs and famed for penning songs for Main Ingredient and Isaac Hayes. Bailey is also none other than Chuck Wood, writer and singer, of the Northern Soul anthem “Seven Days Too Long”.
With guest vocals by Globetrotter legend Meadowlark Lemon this exclusive vinyl reissue will certainly set the ball rollin’!

AOI: Bionix is De La Soul's sixth full-length album, released on December 4, 2001. The first single, "Baby Phat" featuring Yummy Bingham and Devin the Dude, was an ode to larger sized women. Elsewhere, "Held Down", featuring Cee-Lo, found Posdnuos in an introspective mood as he mused on fatherhood, religion, and fame. Slick Rick also made an appearance on "What We Do (For Love)"; a humorous song about puberty and sexual discovery. The album featured skits with a character by the name of Reverend Do Good, which worked as social commentary as well as the intros and outros of the songs. The final Reverend Do Good skit acts as one final advertisement for Ghost Weed as heard on De La Soul's previous album, Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump. A mischievous teenager takes a hit of the substance, then morphs into Slum Village frontman J Dilla, who provides the intro and outro to the marijuana-themed song "Peer Pressure" (which he also produced).

Maxo releases his new album Mars Is Electric. Earlier this week, Maxo released a third haunting video,
directed by Vincent Haycock, from the visual world of ‘Mars’ for the title track. Maxo previewed the album with the release of singles
“Human?” and “Donahoo’s Chicken” this spring, which arrived with equally raw, inventive, and unnerving music videos.
Mars Is Electric is Maxo’s first official release since he dropped two critically acclaimed albums in 2023 with Even God Has A Sense of Humor and Debbie’s Son. His fifth full-length album finds the Southern Californian artist self-aware and mature. Having lived the last decade of his musical life intentionally creating specific bodies of work rooted in imagery, observation, and capturing moments, Maxo spent this previous year freely creating without a specific plan, relieved from all obligations and restrictions.
“This is the first time that I really didn’t care, I didn’t approach things so seriously,” the artist shrugs off, meaning that without expectations or specific goals, his creativity flourished. This opening finds the artist having conversations he’s been avoiding, having lived silently in the pain of those topics for the past few years. Exploring uncomfortable themes about personal life, relationships, and family fractures, life before and after the loss of innocence, and an abundance of existential spirals.
The exploration was not only thematic but also musical in nature. During the creation process, Maxo was immersed in a wide array of music from past to present - France Joli, $amaad, Steve Spacek, Cherelle, DJ Quik, Lisha G - influences that seeped their way into these songs. The album opens in a loose, dreamlike state—experimental and searching, mirroring the emotional fog of someone looking for something real to hold onto. But as it progresses, so does Maxo’s energy as he fiercely rides and weaves on songs with a contagious confidence, producing some of his most kinetic and lyrically impressive music to date.
As the work and vision coalesced into a body of work, Maxo found that he was unlocking a creative language with his collaborators that felt wholly new - a new understanding of why and how he was making art for this world. What emerged from this year-long process was a new musical journey and a future where Maxo refuses to be another bad example of what could be, refusing to mind the blueprint set down. LA-based producer Real Bad Man and Michigan rapper Willie the Kid release their new collaborative album, Midnight, via the producer’s own Real Bad Man Records label. The album, which marks the producer’s second collaborative project of the year following Dear Psilocybin with ZelooperZ, includes guest appearances from UK rapper Sonnyjim, New York’s Lord Sko and frequent RBM collaborator Boldy James, who will be releasing his own Real Bad Man-produced album in May.
The album came together naturally for the pair, letting each new song inform the identity of the project as a whole. Speaking about how they identified that central theme of the album, Willie says, “I think where Adam and I agreed upon is that the stand out records were all themes for the night, late night drive, after hours dinners, shopping, private rooftop hotel suites, it’s a thinking album, a cruising album preferably enjoyed at night…midnight””
Midnight marks the early stages of what’s shaping up to be a prolific run of collaborations for Real Bad Man in 2025. His second album of the year builds off of the momentum he sparked last month with his first full-length album with ZelooperZ, Dear Psilocybin, which The FADER called “clear-eyed and focused in its own fantastical way”. Working as a duo with the dynamic lyricism of Willie the Kid after the psychedelic sounds of Dear Psilocybin, Real Bad Man returns to the essential underground beatmaking that he first emerged onto the scene with through his On High Alert series. His crackling, lo-fi production pairs perfectly with Willie’s gritty delivery, laying a foundation for the longtime lyrical stylist who has worked alongside some of the genre’s modern heroes including Nas, Lil Wayne, The Alchemist, Roc Marciano, Curren$y and more.

DESCRIPTION
Crazy Noise is the 1989 debut album by New Haven, Connecticut rapper and producer Stezo. After being a dancer for hip-hop group EPMD, Stezo signed a solo record deal with Sleeping Bag/Fresh Records and recorded this debut album. It features two charting singles: "Freak the Funk" and "It's My Turn”, plus fan favorites “To The Max” and “Bring The Horns.” Crazy Noise is chock full of crafty rhymes and original loops, and Stezo was the first person ever to use some of these more notable loops. Stezo died in his sleep on April 29, 2020, leaving behind a legacy begging to be properly commemorated. This reissue is one step in that process. Crazy Noise is an overlooked and underappreciated album that serves both as a time capsule for hip-hop’s late 1980s golden era, and a lesson in keeping it real. An overlooked detail is that the album was mixed and engineered by the late great Paul C, who also produced for the Ultramagnetic MCs, Biz Markie and, Eric B and Rakim.

A photo in Rodney Stepp’s scrapbook sums this period in his life in music. It’s 1974, The Spinners were headliners at the “Zaire 74” music festival, a sideshow to Muhammad Ali’s fabled “Rumble in the Jungle” fight with George Foreman. Among the faded snapshots, there’s a picture of Stepp backstage posing arm in arm with Ali; another image shows The Greatest seated at Stepp’s Fender Rhodes alongside vocalist Etta James. It was all a dream for this Naptown wunderkind, who had previously recorded for Herb Miller’s LAMP Records as the Diplomatics and had issued the sweet soul killer “Young Girl” as Jazzie Cazzie and the Eight Sounds on a rare Knaptown 45. (These recordings have been documented on the Now-Again LAMP anthology and our Loving On The Flipside compilation.) But as exciting as his rise out of those local status was, as exciting as it was to headline festivals and arenas and appear on late night talk shows, Stepp grew restless with the mechanical routine of being a sideman. He grew tired of playing the same charts night after night.He was hungry for a creative outlet that mimicked his earliest days in recorded music. So, in 1978, Stepp left The Spinners and returned to Indianapolis, where he established an all-stargroup of musicians–including members of Jazzie Cazzie and the fabled Amnesty–and he named the band Rapture. They inspired countless others. They recorded an album’s worth of material. Now-Again’s Egon first got tapes from Stepp in 2002 and dutifully transferred them, but the time was not right for a foray into this wealth of material. Come 2025, and this is the first time it Rapture’s music is seeing the light of day, a triumphant, late career moment for Stepp and a cause for celebration of those intrigued by deep, sweet soul and disco funk

Rakim is an American rapper best known as one half of the legendary rap duo Eric B. & Rakim. Rakim is considered a transformative figure in hip hop for raising the bar for MC technique higher than it had ever been. His career took a detour when he was arrested after crashing his car and violating his probation, which led to a three-year sentence. Eightball and MJG released their debut album in 1993, featuring a track in which Eightball called himself Mr. Big. After being released from prison and inspired by the rise of southern Hip-Hop, Donald changed his rap moniker to "The Last Mr. Bigg" and got in the studio. Shortly after he started recording, he had another encounter with the law and was about to appear in court. He penned the single "Trial Time" about his court case, which would appear on his debut album, Only If U Knew, released on Warlock Records in 2000, putting Mobile, Alabama, on the map. In 2004, Bigg was shot in the eye during a botched robbery and survived the attack. He had his eye replaced with a diamond-encrusted glass eye. The next year, with his distinct gruff voice, he provided the chorus to Three 6 Mafia's "Poppin My Collar". Bigg continued to record and tour, but would never release another album after his 2003 sophomore album, The Mask is Off. The Last Mr. Bigg sadly passed away in his sleep in 2015, but he left behind his southern rap legacy as the Rap Kingpin of Alabama. For the 25th Anniversary, and for the first time on vinyl, a limited edition pressing of Only If U Knew is now available. The Notes & Tones – Second Vintage - the album: The second vintage of Notes & Tones continues where the first album – all based on Sun Ra samples - left off: DJ Muggs’ deep dive into Gene Perla’s PM Records catalog of jazz’s wide reach, produced in collaboration with Egon of Now-Again Records, who manages Perla’s catalog and readied this album for release.
Notes & Tones – the wine- 2022 vintage: Produced by Chris Brockway of Broc Cellars in Berkeley from grapes picked in Broc’s organically farmed Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino. The wine is a blend of three grape varieties: 50% Ribolla Galla, 45% Tocai Friulano and 5% Trebbiano. All grapes naturally fermented on its native yeasts and skins in sandstone jarres, then gently pressed to age back into jarres for twelve months. After that year in jarres it was racked to neutral oak barrique where it lived for six months to develop further. The wine was hand bottled by Muggs, Egon and Chris at the start of 2024 and aged for another year in bottle. 540 bottles made.

En Vogue was formed in the late 80s by Oakland-based production and songwriting duo Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy when they recruited vocalists for their release “FM2” for Atlantic. The concept was simple, a modern-day girl trio in the tradition of the Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, the Ronettes and the like who had flourished in the early 1960s. Approximately 3000 women attended the auditions with Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, and Maxine Jones making the final cut. The group expanded almost immediately to a quartet with the addition of Terry Ellis who was initially heartbroken when missing the audition due to a delayed flight. Their debut, Born To Sing, went on to be certified Platinum three times over, propelled by four major singles, including "Lies", "You Don't Have to Worry", and "Hold On" (which was famously interpolated on the LL Cool J song “The Boomin’ System” from the same year), all of which peaked at the number one slot on Billboard's Hot R&B Songs chart. In addition to their immediate success, the group influenced the wave of vocal groups throughout the 90s, with a line-up of En Vogue continuing to this day. The super group Deltron 3030 is composed of producer Dan the Automator, rapper Del tha Funkee Homosapien and DJ Kid Koala. Their self-titled release features appearances by Damon Albarn (Gorillaz, Blur), Prince Paul, Peanut Butter Wolf, DJ Money Mark, MC Paul Barman, Sean Lennon and more. This Hip Hop concept album was released the same year as Gorillaz’ first 12" and is on a
similar plane. Following the release of Deltron 3030, all three members participated in Gorillaz’ self- titled debut album. With Del aka Deltron Zero on vocals, Dan the Automator aka The Cantankerous Captain Aptos on production, and Kid Koala aka Skiznoid the Boy Wonder on turntables, Deltron 3030 is in fact a concept album, taking the listener on a paranoid journey set in a dystopian year 3030 dealing with viruses, the apocalypse, an oppressive government, and a war waged against a huge company called the Corporate Bank of Time that rules the universe, For the 25th Anniversary Edition, Deltron 3030 is presented in a double splatter vinyl pressing housed in a gatefold jacket. Record one is a clear, yellow and black splatter with the second LP in a clear, mint green and bluejay splatter pressing. This album marked the second solo collaboration (and third collaborative effort overall) between highly decorated Griselda captain/Drumwork founder Conway the Machine, and mysterious underground production phenom Big Ghost Ltd.
After the critical successes of both Griselda Ghost (along with Westside Gunn) and No One Mourns The Wicked, it seemed like a no-brainer that the two would likely team up once again. The results this go round were a more ambitious beat selection, and topics ranging from personal loss to mental health struggles to lifelong regrets. Of course, no Conway album would be complete without him shooting up some spots, putting holes in animate objects, and being a general menace to society, and La Maquina is more than happy to oblige.
Album guests include frequent Roc Marciano collaborator Knowledge The Pirate, lyrical heavyweight Ransom, and eventual Griselda signee Rome Streetz, as well legendary turntablist D Styles providing characteristically mind-bending scratches on several of the songs.

Ode to R.L is a heartfelt collaborative album in honor of the late Hill Country Blues legend R.L. Boyce, born out of a magical night at Luther Dickinson’s Zebra Ranch Studios in Coldwater, Mississippi. Originally recorded during the pandemic while artists were off the road and hungry to create, the session became an impromptu summit of Hill Country and regional blues talent, including Christone “KingFish” Ingram, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Sharde Thomas, Jontavious Willis, Cam Kimbrough, and more. For G. Love, playing harmonica alongside R.L. that night was a dream realized, raw, soulful and full of laughter. After releasing Philadelphia Mississippi, G. Love and producer Logan Tichnor revisited the tapes and uncovered a powerful idea: sampling and reimagining R.L.'s performances into a fresh, contemporary context. Logan’s vision transformed the recordings into new tracks that fuse Hill Country Blues with modern grooves, capturing both R.L.'s spirit and the energy of the studio that night. Work on the project continued while R.L. was alive, but after his passing, it took on even deeper meaning. Ode to R.L stands as both a celebration and continuation of R.L. Peace and love in late 60s America did not come without parallel feelings of fear and confusion about the social situation – specifically about Vietnam. “Safe In My Garden” is the latest Ace compilation in an acclaimed series compiled by Bob Stanley – it’s a companion piece to the much-praised “State Of The Union (The American Dream In Crisis 1967 – 1973) Ace CDCHD 1533/XXQLP2 057 2018.
The music on “Safe In My Garden” is harmony-laden, beautifully produced soft rock. Sunshine pop, even - a melodic, innovative style of American music that grew in the mid-60s out of the folk and surf scenes, exemplified by the Beach Boys and the Mamas and Papas. You will hear orchestral arrangements, and soft boy-girl vocals. But it wasn’t made in isolation from what was going on in the outside world. There are clouds and minor chords, plenty of melancholy in those harmonies.
“Safe In My Garden” includes songs of escape (Mark Eric’s ‘Move With The Dawn’, the Groop’s ‘A Famous Myth’), loss (the Eighth Day’s ‘How Can I Stop Loving You’, the New Colony Six’s ‘Prairie Grey’), dreamscapes (Tommy James and the Shondells’ ‘She’, Nancy Priddy’s ‘Christina's World’), rebirth (Smokey and his Sister’s ‘Creators Of Rain’), a simpler world (the Free Design’s ‘My Brother Woody’) and a philosophically sounder future (Chad & Jeremy’s ‘The Ark’, Best of Friends’ ‘Summer Sound’).
It contains some surprisingly dark messages paired with beautiful melodies, as well as songs of hope. Thousands of young musicians in cities, suburbs and small towns across the States from the mid to late 60s spent their mornings hiding from the mailman, dreading the draft. This is the Sound of Young America in the late 60s, keeping its fingers crossed.

DESCRIPTION
Peace and love in late 60s America did not come without parallel feelings of fear and confusion about the social situation – specifically about Vietnam. “Safe In My Garden” is the latest Ace compilation in an acclaimed series compiled by Bob Stanley – it’s a companion piece to the much-praised “State Of The Union (The American Dream In Crisis 1967 – 1973) Ace CDCHD 1533/XXQLP2 057 2018.
The music on “Safe In My Garden” is harmony-laden, beautifully produced soft rock. Sunshine pop, even - a melodic, innovative style of American music that grew in the mid-60s out of the folk and surf scenes, exemplified by the Beach Boys and the Mamas and Papas. You will hear orchestral arrangements, and soft boy-girl vocals. But it wasn’t made in isolation from what was going on in the outside world. There are clouds and minor chords, plenty of melancholy in those harmonies.
“Safe In My Garden” includes songs of escape (Mark Eric’s ‘Move With The Dawn’, the Groop’s ‘A Famous Myth’), loss (the Eighth Day’s ‘How Can I Stop Loving You’, the New Colony Six’s ‘Prairie Grey’), dreamscapes (Tommy James and the Shondells’ ‘She’, Nancy Priddy’s ‘Christina's World’), rebirth (Smokey and his Sister’s ‘Creators Of Rain’), a simpler world (the Free Design’s ‘My Brother Woody’) and a philosophically sounder future (Chad & Jeremy’s ‘The Ark’, Best of Friends’ ‘Summer Sound’).
It contains some surprisingly dark messages paired with beautiful melodies, as well as songs of hope. Thousands of young musicians in cities, suburbs and small towns across the States from the mid to late 60s spent their mornings hiding from the mailman, dreading the draft. This is the Sound of Young America in the late 60s, keeping its fingers crossed.

Ace Records are delighted to reissue Irma Thomas’ classic debut album “Wish Someone Would Care”.
Originally released in 1964, the album title was taken from her big R&B hit single ‘Wish Someone Would Care’ which got to #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1964.
Produced by Eddie Ray and arranged by H.B. Barnum it’s a stone cold soul classic featuring tracks such as ‘Please Send Me Someone To Love’. ‘Straight From The Heart’, ‘Another Woman’s Man’ and ‘Break-A- Way’ that was the B-side to ‘Wish Someone Would Care’.
As well as pressing the album on 180gm vinyl Ace are delighted to feature an interview with Irma discussing this part of her career with writer Garth Cartwright.
