DESCRIPTION
Ode to R.L is a heartfelt collaborative album in honor of the late Hill Country Blues legend R.L. Boyce, born out of a magical night at Luther Dickinson’s Zebra Ranch Studios in Coldwater, Mississippi. Originally recorded during the pandemic while artists were off the road and hungry to create, the session became an impromptu summit of Hill Country and regional blues talent, including Christone “KingFish” Ingram, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Sharde Thomas, Jontavious Willis, Cam Kimbrough, and more. For G. Love, playing harmonica alongside R.L. that night was a dream realized, raw, soulful and full of laughter. After releasing Philadelphia Mississippi, G. Love and producer Logan Tichnor revisited the tapes and uncovered a powerful idea: sampling and reimagining R.L.'s performances into a fresh, contemporary context. Logan’s vision transformed the recordings into new tracks that fuse Hill Country Blues with modern grooves, capturing both R.L.'s spirit and the energy of the studio that night. Work on the project continued while R.L. was alive, but after his passing, it took on even deeper meaning. Ode to R.L stands as both a celebration and continuation of R.L. Boyce’s legacy and a bridge between generations, honoring the roots while pushing the blues into the future.

Released in the winter of 1995, Dah Shinin’ introduced Smif-N-Wessun as torchbearers of the gritty, sample-driven East Coast sound that defined a generation. Backed by Da Beatminerz’ haunting, jazz-laced production and supported by their Boot Camp Clik brethren, Tek and Steele delivered a debut that was as raw as it was revolutionary — capturing the essence of mid-90s Brooklyn. Now, 30 years later, Dah Shinin’ returns in its most complete form. The 30th Anniversary Definitive Deluxe Edition brings together, for the first time in one place, the full original album, two essential remixes from Wrekonize and Sound Bwoy Buriell, and rare material, including the long-unreleased “Nuttin’ Move But Da Money,” finally available officially after years on white label. Pressed across three LPs and housed in a premium tri-fold jacket featuring original artwork, newly commissioned liner notes, period photography, and archival content, this expanded edition stands as a tribute to the album’s creation and legacy. From the underground anthem “Bucktown” to the crew showcase “Cession At Da Doghillee,” every track celebrates the timeless sound that made Dah Shinin’ a classic. Recognized by The Source as one of the 100 Best Rap Albums of All Time, this definitive edition is both a tribute to a landmark release and an essential piece of hip hop history.

DESCRIPTION
Widely hailed as the founding fathers of funk, The Meters laid down the blueprint for groove-heavy music that still echoes through hip-hop, rock, and soul today. With razor-sharp rhythm, swampy New Orleans flavor, and a sound tighter than a snare drum, they turned instrumental jams into seismic statements. Whether backing legends like Dr. John or spinning out classics like "Cissy Strut," The Meters didn't just play funk - they defined it. One of New Orleans greatest bands was The Meters, which put the Big Easy on the map as a funk and R&B capital in the 1960s and '70s. The group began as an instrumental quartet, cutting eight studio albums between 1969 and 1977. Although they were never officially captured live on record during that time, in 1981 after the group had split, an obscure label called REG Associates released an LP called At Rozy's which presented a performance supposedly taped at a New Orleans nightclub in December 1976. Recent research, however, reveals that the concert was recorded the previous year at a different venue: San Francisco's prestigious The Great American Music Hall. Newly remastered from the original ¼"master tapes, the performance-including material not heard before-is now presented in full for the first time. It captures The Meters in their prime, giving the listener a front-row seat to witness up close one of the most dynamic funk and soul bands ever. Press "play" and prepare, as Art Neville states mid-way through the gig, to be Meterized!

Hip-Hop legend Masta Ace gets remixed with Earth Wind & Fire samples by remix mastermind Tom Caruana (Wu-Tang vs The Beatles / Jimi Hendrix). Tom remixes material predominantly from the Masta Ace Incorporated era, as well as other stages in Ace’s career. What makes this project unique is the addition of 2 brand new tracks by Masta Ace, ‘Freedom House’ & ‘Uncle Larry’ which both see Ace in a retrospective mood. The Earth Wind & Fire material sampled is generally from their earlier releases, more raw and downtempo than the uptempo disco they are better known for. The album flows like a live show with soundbites and skits from both parties. There’s tracks with Guru, Phonte, Wordsworth, Edo G, Torae, Stricklin and Large Professor. Ace and guests flow as if they were there onstage with the band creating cosmic vibes to the soundscape of kalimbas, vocal harmonies, funky basslines and banging drums!

SON PALENQUE -
Masters of palenquera innovation
In the history of Afro-Colombian culture, Son Palenque is without a doubt an exceptional band, and its history has a place at the very heart of ancestral palenquera music as well as at the musical intersection between Africa and Colombia, which took place on Colombia's Caribbean coast in the 70s and 80s and which continues today through champeta, a musical genre and dance that also bears a strong African influence.
The members of Son Palenque band grew up in rural communities fixed in time, with deep musical roots, duels between tambora players and a legendary musical profusion of traditional musicians that built the foundations of today's Afro-Colombian music.
Later they all migrated to the city and bit by bit made a place for themselves. The story of this record starts on a night just like any other, at a picó, a musical block party, of the Pablo VI neighborhood, in the city of Cartagena. It was the peak of Afro-Coastal psychedelic music, of African music and of an endless number of musical fusions. Excited by the gigantic party they had been at until dawn, rocked by the deafening noise of the speakers and the records played at the picó, a few friends went to the beaches of Marbella and improvised a musical rumba; one of them grabbed a beer
can, the other one a stick, Justo Valdez sang his beautiful melodies and the magic of palenquera music grew mystically in front of the waters of the endless sea. "That's where Son Palenque was born," recalls Justo with excitement and nostalgia. Enrique Tejedor and Luciano Torres as the back-up singers, his brother Tomás Valdez in the tambor alegre (a Colombian drum), Pánfilo Valdez as the second lead vocalist...
Little by little the group started to consolidate itself. The first chance came in 1980, when they recorded their first single for the Fonobosa record label. Two years later they recorded an LP, again with Fonobosa, along with Estefanía Caicedo. Later on the band signed with the label Felito Records, in Barranquilla, which during the 80s produced some of the finest gems of psychedelic and Afro-roots music of the time. With Felito Records a new era began for the group. They recorded the LPs "Ane Jue" and "African Erotic" for Félix Brutón, the owner of the label, with sound engineering from Eduardo Dávila and the participation of great musicians like Michi Sarmiento on saxophone, Abelardo Carbonó on guitar, and his brother Abe on bass, among others. These two LPs were a milestone in the history of Afro-Colombian music: for the first time they showed us traditional palenquera music, chalupa, bullerengue, lumlalú and other traditional rhythms mixed with modern arrangements of bass, guitar and saxophone on extraordinary records.
Later on the group recorded three LPs for the CBS music label: "Larepa' Sa", "Los trotamundos del sabor" and "Kaine Sound Band", with the production of Willie Salcedo and the sound engineering of Alfonso Abril. These albums were recorded in the Unisón studios in Barranquilla. In the mid-90s, the musical scene underwent significant changes. The LP industry started to decline, new technologies for digital recording appeared, sequencers and effects, that forever changed the future of music. Son Palenque lost its recording contract, and Justo Valdez started recording songs as a solo artist for the nascent industry of champeta criolla.
In 1999 Son Palenque recorded for the label Palenque Records the song 'Kumina', a long with guitarist Sekou Diabate "The Gold Fingers", legendary leader of the band Bebeya Jazz (Guinea-Conakry). Subsequently they recorded for the same label, under the production of Lucas Silva, the record "Ma Kamajan Ri Musika Ri Palengue", released in 2012, which marked the folkloric group's resurrection. And so Son Palenque continues to play, 30 years after its foundation, and still has a bright future ahead of it. The band has gone through various phases throughout time and they always come back innovating and breaking the mold, with the depth of their roots, their legacy and mastery in the composition of songs, masters in the conception of a unique musical universe.

DESCRIPTION
Abelardo Carbonó, the godfather of champeta, was born in 1948 in Ciénaga, a small town between Santa Marta and Cartagena, Colombia. He started playing guitar when he was eight or nine, just playing along with his father. His family moved to Barranquilla in 1959. Upon his arrival, he quickly went to become a police cadet as it was pretty much all the city had to offer him in terms of earning one's life.
At the turn of the 80s, Abelardo had almost two decades of being in the police, a job he "wasn't very good at". With his brothers Jafeth (bass) and Abel (solo guitar), he progressively formed what was to become the nucleus of the bands to come, developing their signature: a sharp guitar, a strong bass and a choir that only brothers' voices can deliver. The tropical pop sound, the groaning voice, the drum kit, the mix of rockish and tropical guitar that one would hear later in Abelardo's work, were already visible in his personal way of playing Caribbean music in these early days.
Although tracks like 'A otro perro con ese hueso' may not be exactly developing the same kind of sound, there was already a resemblance in terms of format and arrangement. The vallenato cajón drum, a traditional feature one would rarely consider beyond vallenato circles, was used here and would be used extensively by Abelardo in various contexts. With its childish voices drowned in reverb, the swinging electric bass contrasting with the acoustic guitar, and the funny lyrics about a man who promises a lot as the choir rejects his affirmations, the tune stood out of a 12-song compilation released by Sonolux and gained Abelardo's band attention from the music industry.
Other tracks like 'Quiero a mi gente' and 'Schallcarri' seem to testify once again that Fela Kuti's "Shakara" had a huge impact on the musicians from the coast; the West African and French Caribbean influence became more and more obvious in the band's work, despite Abelardo claiming that he wasn't listening to radio, nor looking for records. In fact, the most decisive influence was the African and Afro Caribbean one: it ranged from the Super Negro Bantous to South African music, the 45s from Kenya and of course Congolese music, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Haitian music, French West Indies... Funk and pop were also important, just as vallenato, cumbia and porro to name a few.
For several years, Abelardo enjoyed the savoir faire and experience of the best studios around and worked with producers such as the great Eduardo Dávila, some sort of costeño Lee Perry, out of which came out memorable sessions with collaborations by legends like Michi Sarmiento and several artists from the Dolcey Gutiérrez Orchestra. The groove was the law, and what a groove!
In his albums for Felito, Abelardo recorded such gems as 'Negra Kulenge', 'Palenque' or 'Carolina', magnified by a great sound and a unique mix. But, for some reason he cannot explain, the follow up to those albums was not, as one could expect, immediate. He recalls having trouble to handle the destiny of his band and actively promote it to find gigs. Instead he even went to the Guajira region as a policeman or to work for the coal mine, supposedly to teach music in the mining company's schools there.
The best of this boundless artist is yet to come. Europe and the rest of the world is finally about to discover the talent of this kind of Colombian Tom Zé. A man representing the psychedelic yet groovy side of the Caribbean musical world, one of the best kept secrets of Colombian music.

DESCRIPTION
During the golden age of vinyl—from the 1960s through the 1980s—Colombia produced an astonishing number of 45 rpm records—many of them not tied to full albums, that continue to surprise collectors and music lovers today.
This abundance can be attributed to many factors: affordability, jukebox demand, radio promotion, or simply the joy of sharing a small musical token with a loved one. Whatever the reason, these little records traveled far and wide, sometimes ending up in distant countries —especially Mexico—, carried by DJs, collectors, or pirate radio waves. They became cultural passports, spreading salsa, cumbia, son montuno, and more.
This curated collection highlights hard-to-find salsa 45s from the Discos Fuentes vaults—deep cuts that have long flown under the radar but still light up dance floors today. These tracks, once pressed in small numbers, feature top tier musicianship, fiery brass, unforgettable grooves, and lyrical gems that reflect the rich diversity of Colombia’s musical landscape.
Among the featured artists are: Super Combo “Los Famosos” with their irresistible barrio anthem ‘El Bailador de la esquina’, capturing the spirit of Cali’s street life, Sexteto Manaure, delivering a poignant son that blends regional pride with poetic nostalgia, La Protesta de Colombia, a revolutionary Barranquilla outfit that gave a young Joe Arroyo his early spotlight and channeled the rebellious pulse of the times.
This compilation also includes a range of studio experiments and covers—where artists like Piper Pimienta, Galileo y Su Banda, and La Integración reimagined beloved hits, from boleros to vallenatos, through a distinctly Colombian salsa lens.
Every track tells a story—of artistic ambition, social change, regional identity, or simple joy. Some were attempts at hits, others personal expressions or studio curiosities. What they share is an authenticity that continues to resonate.
These obscure gems, long scattered across dusty crates and forgotten jukeboxes, now find new life. They speak not just to the past, but to a timeless rhythm that still moves dancers and dreamers alike.

DESCRIPTION
“The Spice of Life”, released in November 1969, stands as Marlena Shaw’s second—and final—studio album for Cadet Records, produced and arranged by the renowned Richard Evans and Charles Stepney.
From the opening, Shaw’s voice—both playful and powerful—cuts through the lush yet tight-knit arrangements, weaving together a vibrant tapestry of soul, proto-funk, jazz, gospel, and blues. The album features two defining classics: her deeply resonant original of ‘Woman of the Ghetto’ and a signature take on Ashford & Simpson’s ‘California Soul’, both staples in sampling culture (you'll probably find that you're more familiar with Shaw's material than you thought.)
Evans and Stepney’s arrangements are far from mere support—they’re panoramic and inventive. You’ll hear kalimba flourishes, psych-tinged guitar accents, and bongo-fueled organ textures that elevate each track, keeping the atmosphere rich but never overwhelming. Moments like the Bacharach-styled ‘Looking Through the Eyes of Love’ or the dramatic flair of ‘Stormy Monday’ showcase their widescreen sensibility and Shaw’s versatility.
Beneath its musical elegance, “The Spice of Life” carries a weighty current of social commentary. Tracks such as ‘Woman of the Ghetto’ and the succinct, fierce ‘Liberation Conversation’ bring political and feminist themes into a soulful, expressive framework—adding unexpected depth to the sophisticated sonic palette.
This album offers an immersive journey through soul-jazz mastery, one that rewarded listeners with sampling gold for decades to come. Reissue on 180g vinyl.

DESCRIPTION
Among the most revered voices in funk, Marva Whitney holds a special place thanks to her fierce energy and unmistakable style on tracks like the classic ‘Unwind Yourself,’ a long-time favorite for DJs and dance floors alike. Emerging from the dynamic world of the James Brown Revue in the late 1960s—alongside iconic names like Lyn Collins and Vicki Anderson—Marva quickly carved out a name for herself.
In 1969, she began recording as a solo artist under James Brown’s King label, scoring a Top 20 R&B hit with ‘It’s My Thing.’ While mainstream hits were few, her music resonated deeply with funk lovers and crate diggers around the world. Songs like ‘You Got to Have a Job’ and the endlessly sampled ‘Unwind Yourself’ have only grown in stature over the decades.
Her album, “It’s My Thing”, dropped that same year and has since become a touchstone of the genre. Backed by the legendary JB’s and produced by James Brown himself—who also contributed to most of the songwriting—the album captures a raw, unapologetic funk sound with a distinctly female voice at the forefront.
From the explosive opening of ‘It’s My Thing’—a bold response to the Isley Brothers’ ‘It’s Your Thing’—Marva channels sheer intensity, backed by a band that doesn’t let up. The pace briefly softens with ‘If You Love Me,’ a soul soaked ballad in the spirit of Otis Redding, before diving back into the rhythmic grit of tracks like ‘Unwind Yourself.’

This compilation brings together for the first time the best songs by Los Zheros, one of the most renowned cumbia bands to emerge in the early 1970s in Iquitos—alongside groups like Los Rogers and Los Wemblers—in the heart of Peru's Amazon capital.
The unique Amazonian sound blended fast, percussive cumbia rhythms with electric guitars in a surf style—a distinctive fusion that came to define Peruvian-recorded cumbia, markedly different from the traditional cumbia styles that developed in other cumbia-producing countries like Colombia.
The album includes their psychedelic rock hit ‘Cuarto Oscuro,’ a highly sought-after track not only by cumbia collectors but also by garage and psychedelic DJs. This song also marked the beginning of their recording career in 1973.

DESCRIPTION
Ranil is undoubtedly the most unconventional figure among the greats of Amazonian cumbia, earning a well-deserved place alongside all the better-known iconic bands. He worked as a teacher, criollo guitarist, radio host, TV entrepreneur, and politician, but gained lasting fame as the founder of Ranil y Su Conjunto Tropical in the 1970s.
By 1968, around the same time Los Destellos were making waves in Lima, groups like Los Wembler’s de Iquitos and Juaneco y su Combo began electrifying cumbia in Iquitos. This new genre, dubbed Amazonian cumbia, exploded nationwide in 1973, thanks to hits by Juaneco y su Combo, Los Mirlos, and Los Wembler’s. The success these bands achieved spawned dozens of other groups from the Amazon. Ranil, always a visionary, recognized the movement’s potential and joined forces through his first single recorded on the Dinsa label in 1974. Unhappy with the contractual terms, he went on to found Producciones Llerena, the label on which he would release the rest of his discography.
Over the years, Ranil y su Conjunto Tropical featured guitarists like Límber Zumba and Luis Nigro, while Ranil remained the lead vocalist and bassist for group. Zumba and Nigro had already played with other regional bands and written songs for groups like Los Destellos and Los Mirlos.
This compilation offers a glimpse into the vast musical output Ranil created in the late 1970s and early 1980s, bringing together 14 tracks from the band’s 10 LPs. These records have always been hard to come by as, despite being recorded in Lima, they were distributed by Ranil from Iquitos. Psychedelia, rock fusion, cumbia, salsa, mambo, Amazonian folk… you’ll find all these flavors blended into the vibrant, jungle-rich sound Ranil crafted.

DESCRIPTION
Indianapolis' legendary Rhythm Machine is one of the rare funk bands that transitioned between eras of funk's history seamlessly, creating awesome funk sides for a host of independent labels between the years of 1968 and 1976. Born out of cult Indy funk band The Highlighters' ashes, the Rhythm Machine was founded in the early '70s by bass player James Boone and guitarist James Brantley.
Their self-titled and only LP, originally released in 1976, is a wild, super-groovy ride with tight band energy and a bunch of unexpected twists that keep things interesting from start to finish. At first, you might catch some Earth, Wind & Fire vibes—deep basslines, funky beats, and killer horn sections—but dig a little deeper and you’ll find something a little looser, a little cooler. There’s a smooth, jazzy undercurrent running through a lot of these tracks that gives the whole thing a fresh, off-the-beaten-path feel.
Some songs drift into a dreamy, almost spacey zone—think cosmic funk with a romantic twist. The production is silky, almost liquid-like, letting the guitars shimmer and the keys float. And when the soprano sax kicks in? Pure magic. It adds just the right bite to take the tracks up a notch.
Perfect for late-night grooves, chill sessions, or anyone hunting for that hidden gem funk record with serious soul.
Virtually impossible to find in its original edition, we are now reissuing it once again thanks to a collaboration with Now Again.
Pressed on 180g vinyl.

DESCRIPTION
In 1976, legendary musician and composer Roy Ayers released one of the most iconic albums of his career: "Everybody Loves the Sunshine." This album not only solidified Ayers as a key figure in the world of jazz-funk but also marked a milestone in soul music and contemporary jazz. It features a sophisticated blend of irresistible grooves, smooth melodies, and a unique sound that has endured over the years, becoming a reference for multiple generations of musicians and listeners.
By the mid-70s, Ayers had already established his reputation with his band, Roy Ayers Ubiquity, and his distinctive use of the vibraphone, which became his personal trademark. However, with this album, Ayers ventured into a smoother, more accessible sound, partly in response to the rise of disco music and the growing interest in more experimental sounds within the music scene. Throughout its ten tracks, Ayers managed to create a sonic atmosphere that evoked both the warmth of summer and the sophistication of jazz from that era, set against a backdrop of modern soul.
The production was carried out by Ayers himself, along with his producer and friend, David R. Williams, and features the wonderful sound of Phillip Woo's Fender Rhodes and the powerful energy of the rest of the band, achieving an unmistakable authenticity and freshness. Some of its most well-known songs include the title track, ‘Everybody Loves the Sunshine,’ ‘The Golden Rod,’ and ‘The Third Eye,’ which quickly became classics of jazz-funk and soul.
This album is crucial in Roy Ayers' career, as it demonstrates his ability to remain relevant and creative in an ever-changing music industry. Over the years, "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" has become a cult album, frequently featured in DJ sets by artists like Gilles Peterson, Theo Parrish, and Lefto. Summertime soul classic!

DESCRIPTION
Adib founded Ladies W.C. with his friends Jose Maria Arria “Chema” (bass, vocals), Wolfgang Vivas (lead vocals), and Frank Rojas (drums). Their sound was so innovative that it was not conducive to getting many bookings and they barely managed to play a single concert. As a result, all the original line-up, except Adib, upped and left. Soon after, Stephen Scott and Mario and Jaime Seijas replaced them, seamlessly complementing Adib's playing and his growing interest in blues and psychedelic hard rock.
The group’s first and only album, released by the Venezuelan label Souvenir, was recorded at Continente Studios in just 10 days. Ricardo Landaeta acted as technician, while Adib and Stephen worked out all the structures and arrangements of the songs, as well as the lyrics. They were very intense recording sessions in which they spent full days locked inside the studio. Hector Fuenmayor is the only guest musician on the recording (flute on 'To Walk on Water'). All the songs are their own compositions, which was unusual on the Venezuelan scene, as groups’ repertoires tended to be cover versions of international hits. The sleeve art, displaying a striking illustration instead of the classic covers showing a photo of the band, was also a novel ingredient in Venezuela, as was the distorted sound of the guitars which made great use of the wah-wah pedal, the extensive harmonica playing, and creative use of sound effects, all of which gave the album a unified conceptual feel.
The band were only active for only a couple of years from 1968 to 1969. Mario and Jaime left Venezuela to study in the United States, and although Adib spent a summer there with them playing as Ladies W.C. on the Allentown college circuit, the group was destined to split up.
Adib joined Sky White Meditation after he returned home and remained as a band member until 1972. Meanwhile Jaime Seijas played on another equally seminal record in the history of Venezuelan rock, The Love Depression album, also released by the Souvenir label.

DESCRIPTION
When Creed Taylor was setting up his CTI label one of his proposed signings was Billy Vera. This led to a deal for Vera’s younger sister Kathy McCord. In fact, McCord was the first artist signed and recorded by CTI. Her debut, “Kathy McCord” was released in 1970.
Although the label would go on to establish a fine reputation in jazz, Kathy McCord was a folk rock album. A gifted young poet the 17-year old McCord wrote many of the tracks on the album which were then interpreted in the studio by a crack team of jazz musicians that included Harvey Brooks (bass), Hubert Laws (flute), John Hall (guitar) and Wells Kelly and Ed Shaugnessy (drums). Musically and lyrically both the musicians and McCord stretched out on tracks like ‘Rainbow Ride’, ‘Jennipher’, ‘Candle Waxing’ and ‘Take Away This Pain’ to conjure up an amazing fusing of folk and jazz. The only cover on show was a version of Lennon and McCartney’s ‘She’s Leaving Home’ which McCord repurposed as I’m Leaving Home.
Upon release the album sold poorly. Creed’s expertise and contacts were in the jazz field and he had no idea how to market an album of folk jazz songs sung with fragile beauty by a good looking girl still in her late teenage years. Also, when Billy Vera did not sign to CTI McCord was dropped.
Over time “Kathy McCord” attracted a dedicated following amongst folk-rock collectors in America and the UK. In many respects it was an echo of something like Deena Webster’s 1968 folk rock LP, “Tuesday’s Child” that also came, went and is now sought after.
Ace are delighted to give the world the first vinyl reissue of “Kathy McCord” since 1970. Pressed on black 180gm vinyl it also includes liner notes from Billy Vera who, in conclusion, has this to say about his later beloved sister, “My sister had the goods. She could sing, she could write and she looked great. Like so many other talented people, she just failed to get lucky. Listen and enjoy her. I love her stuff”. You will too...

DESCRIPTION

Between paying his dues at Hip-Hop Shop, building a buzz from his Out of Focus EP, and enjoying more visible success after joining the renowned group Slum Village, Elzhi always had a one-of-a-kind penchant for lyrical wizardry. With multilayered rhyme schemes, uncanny metaphors, and inventive concepts, he persistently had a case as the most gifted rapper in his city — even when Eminem dominated the charts.

But even some of his most dedicated fans knew that he hadn’t crafted a legacy-defining album yet. Such records often come from pain, and in 2009, that’s exactly what he dealt with: his Slum Village groupmate Baatin suddenly died in July, longtime manager and Detroit rap impresario HexMurda suffered a nearly fatal stroke two months later, and he went through a messy public breakup with SV the following year.

In 2011, Elzhi fearlessly took on the biggest challenge of his career: remaking Nas’ GOATed debut album Illmatic in his own name. He enlisted four-piece band Will Sessions to put a live, vibrant spin to sounds originally crafted by producers like DJ Premier, Pete Rock, and Large Professor, and demonstrated lyrical wisdom about when to maintain the original spirit of a song and when to switch things up.

He conjures images of the blocks he grew up on with “Detroit State of Mind,” recounts a romance with a woman who had a traumatic childhood on “One Love,” and uses “Memory Lane” to take a nostalgic cruise through childhood connections before the pain from such reflections is too much to bear.

The technical proficiency was potent as always, but emotiveness made Elmatic blossom: the wistfulness of his mother’s flowing hair before chemotherapy took it from her, falling in love with a woman he met in the mall, the palpable pride in the peaks and valleys of his city.

It was a detailed, refined version of the introspection displayed on Out of Focus. Elmatic proved that Elzhi didn’t just have prodigious talent — he had a city to represent, and he had a story to tell. — William E. Ketchum III
