RECORDED IN NEW YORK

More jazz to dazzle the ears! If you're not familiar with this group, take a listen and join their already solid following in not only the U.S., but also South America. These 4 guys, Don Alias, Gene Perla, Bob Mintzer and Kenny Kirkland don't only possess all this musical wealth just to squander though! They love to perform, and spread their music. And they often will hold clinics which are not only listening but also learning experiences... DOWNBEAT has received them quite well, and one glance at each member's discography puts them right up in the "heavy" league!
Richman Bros. Records, Inc.

Most adventuresome release from the Alliance to date. Everything is well thought out and conceived at a high level of artistic achievement. Jazz programmers will find this of special interest, and jazz buyers will find this something worth having.
Midwest Record Recap

With their musically diverse fourth album, Stone Alliance proves that they deserve the respect and praise of the jazz and contemporary music community.

Highly recommended addition to any playlist!
Eric Gribin, The Jazz Line

Stone Alliance: Heads Up (PM) is an exciting set featuring some top contemporary jazzmen. Led by bassist Gene Perla and drummer Don Alias, the group fuses jazz, Latin, and funk idioms into a cohesive music which is both rhythmically and melodically appealing. The mostly original compositions give Kenny Kirkland, Bob Mintzer, Robert Piltch, Jan Hammer, and a number of other players room to stretch out, and there's some inspired soloing throughout. Stone Alliance represents "fusion" at its best, and the group is deserving of much wider exposure. Alias' "Uncle Jemima" and Orlando Lopez' "Para Los Papinos" are knockouts.
"Gem" Lieberson

What makes this group stand out among others is the natural feeling they have for playing with and among a complicated melange of rhythms.
Bob Rosenblum

Stone Alliance has succeeded in creating a complex sound easy to listen to.
M.P., Erie Times

A really tasty fusion set, with the keyboards covered by Kenny Kirkland and Jan Hammer. No commercial compromises, just honest music, with lots of synthesizer leads and background keyboards.
Jim Aikin, Contemporary Keyboard

"Just love 'Heads Up.' I will give it maximum exposure."

DESCRIPTION
They were, or rather are, the first representatives of the latest musical evolution that has mastered the world. We were, and still are, a dominated, wondrous audience quite fascinated by a different way of life through music. It seems that what Stone Alliance was saying -- about telling a story each time one plays -- is true. We listen to the story woven by the music of Stone Alliance and we identify with it; in the long run we become enriched. And who else but AMIGOS would enrich us? Thank you, Stone Alliance!
Club de Arte

While most of the jazz world is heading toward either commercialism or the avant-garde, it's a pleasure to find a group such as Stone Alliance filling in this ever widening gap.
CBF

This album was recorded after the American trio had stayed a year in Buenos Aires, playing with and absorbing the talents of the Argentinian musicians who accompany here. The result is a dazzling blend of styles, and Stone Alliance's best effort to date. There is some fierce playing, notably from saxophonist Steve Grossman, but the overall feeling is Latin American melancholy and rhythm.

Percussionist Don Alias seems most adept at this synthesis; his African jungle percussion is delightful when positioned against the throb of congas, whistles and other South American instruments.
T.E.

What seven musicians can do with the aid of double and triple tracking, overdubbing, mixing and editing is not only astounding -- but an absolute delight.

Highly recommended to the intelligent jazz-lover.
Mark Allen, Record Review

This gem of a recording, done in Buenos Aires, features the trio known as Stone Alliance -- Steve Grossman, tenor sax, Gene Perla, bass, keyboards and guitar, and Don Alias, percussion and guitar -- augmented by local musicians. The music, as expected, is highly rhythmic, but also unexpectedly eletronic in spots. The traditional -- abandon on the bright "I'll Tell You Tomorrow" -- is contrasted with synthesizer overdub on the languid bolero, "Mujeres Sud Americanas." "Amigos," a surprise favorite, is a brief three-part exposition of what Latin percussion should sound like.

“New York’s Harlem River Drive is a dividing line, a highway where the rich zip past the poor,” says singer Jimmy Norman. Eddie Palmieri’s Latin-funk band of the same name tackled these hard truths, playing prisons and speak- ing to the common man. Ultimately, Norman and Palmieri made a powerful socio-political statement
that continues to resonate to this day."

DESCRIPTION
When initially released in 1971, many critics panned Eddie Palmieri’s album Harlem River Drive. Those critics were wrong. Regardless of critical opinion, the release was not the crossover success Palmieri and Roulette Records had hoped for, at least in the immediate. Over the years the release has developed a following among listeners, DJs, and aficionados of rare-grooves.
The record may have been recorded towards the end of the Latin soul era, yet it features that genre's wonderful mix of Puerto Rican soul, Spanish Harlem Latin, and New York funk. Palmieri worked with an incredibly talented crew of Latin and R&B session musicians to create this quintessential New York vibe, a synthesis of funk and Afro-Cuban sounds. Contributors include Victor Venegas from Mongo Santamaria’s band, Palmieri’s brother Charlie, an accomplished musician in his own right, Bruce Fowler who went on to join Frank Zappa’s band, Dick Meza who went on to great things with Tito Puente, Ray Barretto and Celia Cruz, as well as Andy Gonzalez who’s pedigree includes recordings with Barretto, Johnny Pacheco, Willie Colon
and even Chico O’Farrill. Also appearing Randy Brecker and one of the all-time
greatest of the greats Bernard Purdy.
An over-arching theme of Harlem River Drive is the thought that, as Palmieri puts it “The U.S. is richest country, all this immense wealth, side by side with the most intense poverty, racial prejudice; how is that possible?” A question that’s perhaps more even more relevant today than it was in 1971. A question that can be further explored with Get On Down’s reissue of this seminal recording.

Sammy Davis Jr was a singer, actor, comedian, dancer, TV host and noted amateur photographer. But, he is perhaps best remembered for his role in the iconic film Ocean’s 11 where he played a member of the Rat Pack alongside lifelong friends Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, a role that he lived in real life.
In 1969 he had a #11 Billboard hit with ‘I’ve Gotta Be Me’ after which he signed to the mighty Motown Records in order to reach a younger audience.
The album was released internationally in 1970 and showcased Davis at his smokin’ best covering ‘Spinning Wheel’ and ‘Wichita Lineman’ with his trademark brassy tenor. At the time Davis was a top-draw act in Las Vegas alongside Elvis with whom he developed a close relationship. He appeared in Presley’s concert film That’s The Way It Is and included a superb version of ‘In The Ghetto’ on the album. The set also includes the Motown classics ‘For Once In My Life’, popularised by Stevie Wonder’, and ‘You’ve Made Me So Very Happy’ by Brenda Holloway, co-written by the Holloway sisters and Frank “Do I Love You” Wilson.
Sammy Davis Jr was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement and his legacy lives on through his screen performances and his prolific recorded output.

DESCRIPTION
Marcos Valle is one of the few artists you cannot miss if you have the slightest interest in Brazilian music. Whether your taste is focused on bossa jazz, samba, psych folk or soul, Valle has surely recorded a great album for you. By the late 60s he had already put out enough quality records to secure a place within the top Brazilian songwriters of all time, but his career luckily did not stop there and he continued releasing amazing music over the following decades until this day.
By the dawn of the 1970s, the multi-talented Valle was entering a new era, ready to test the government censors (Brazil was under strict military rule since a coup d’état in 1964) and express a socially aware stance and a playful hodge-podge of musical styles including samba, bossa nova, baião (a rhythmic beat from the rural northeast of Brazil), black American music, and rock.
“Marcos Valle” was originally released in 1970 and features a dynamic musical backing from some of Brazil’s most gifted players. Hip-hop fans may even recognize the opening horn blasts of ‘Ele E Ela,’ sampled to great effect on Jay-Z’s “Thank You.”
It includes some of his most popular songs like ‘Freio Aerodinamico’ and ‘Os Grilos’, swinging between sophistication and groove…
