DESCRIPTION
Double green and yellow vinyl LP pressing. To qualify as a classic, a rap album must be solid from start to finish, containing no fillers, all thrillers. The musical production should match the lyrical skills of the MCs and the artist should possess his or her own style and flavor. Naughty By Nature's self-titled debut can rightfully be called timeless. When it dropped in 1991, it was a critical and commercial success, having been certified platinum. The global hip-hop community took notice, and it's stature stands years later. Featured singles include the sing-along club classic "O.P.P." which reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1991, "Wickedest Man Alive" featuring rap legend Queen Latifah and the "Louie Louie" Vega-produced "1, 2, 3." with a feature from Lakim Shabazz. "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" and "Uptown Anthem, " both became minor hits on the Billboard charts. The self titled album is collection of bouncy beats and powerful rhymes making it a must-have record for lovers of East Coast hip-hop.

DESCRIPTION
In 1992 rap trio House of Pain hit the rap scene with their debut self titled album" House of Pain" fashioning themselves as rowdy Irish-American hooligans, they toured with various rap and alternative-rock bands after their breakthrough. They participated together with Helmet, along with several other rap acts, on the 1993 rap rock collaborative Judgment Night film soundtrack. "House of Pain" went multi-platinum and the self titled debut album spawned the successful producer DJ Muggs, who produced the single "Jump Around". The song was also remixed twice by Pete Rock, one version featuring a verse from him and one without. "Jump Around" became a hit in 1992, reaching number 3 in the United States. A 1993 re-release of the song in the United Kingdom, where the initial release had been a minor hit, peaked at number 8. "Jump Around" was featured at position 580 on Q Magazine's "1001 Best Songs Ever," number 24 on VH1's "100 Greatest Songs of the 90s," number 66 on VH1's "100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop," number 325 on Blender's "500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born" and number 47 on NME's "100 Best Songs of the 1990s." The song is popular among dancehall DJs and is widely regarded in the United Kingdom as a club classic. The album also featured Cypress Hill member B-Real on the song "Put Your Head Out" and Funkdoobiest's Son Doobie on "House and the Rising Son", both members of the musical collective known as Soul Assassins. On July, 23 2021 "House Of Pain" will be repressed and reissued as part of Tommy Boy's 40th Anniversary celebration; only one of the 40 albums that the legendary NYC label plans to release this year. Q magazine "... their music is of the dense, hard-hitting school of hip hop... The group have absorbed black rap's musical lessons and create a satisfying platform for their above average deliveries... " The Source "... a very solid and at times exceptional album... imagine if Licensed to Ill wasn't an upper middle class Jewish thing but rather a working class Irish thang... The atmosphere is like that of a cross between a frat party and a bar room brawl... "

While Digital Underground's debut album, "Sex Packets, " set the tone for the groups meteoric rise and helped them forever change hip-hop, they continued to wow fans through the years with several gamebending projects. In 1991, they released their now cult-classic, "This is an E.P. The project went on the receive gold-certification from the RIAA and has since become and often-overlooked gem amongst hip-hop aficionados worldwide.

DESCRIPTION
Formed in 1999 by acclaimed hip-hop producers Dan the Automator (Gorillaz, Dr. Octagon, Deltron 3030) and Prince Paul (Stetsasonic, de la Soul, Gravediggaz,) Handsome Boy Modeling School is a concept project that instantly turned heads and brought a whole new dynamic to the world of hip-hop. Hidden behind the world-class and all-star lineup, the group created aproject that parodied vain, consumerist, materialistic and self-absorbed members of upper-class society. While the 1999 release of their debut project, "So... How's Your Girl?," helped to set the tone and introduce the world to Handsome Boy Modeling School, it was their 2004 follow-up, "White People," which helped to solidify the project as a game-changer amongst hip-hop heads. With Dan the Automator and Prince Paul behind the boards, "White People," featured a stacked list of features including but not limited to de la Soul, Jack Johnson, Lord Finesse, Mike Shonoda, Pharrell Williams, El-P and RZA. Touted by John Murphy of MusicOMH as, "the most innovative, original and enjoyable hip-hop album since Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below," "White People has undoubtedlybecome a somewhat overlooked gem of it's era. Topping out at #168 on the Billboard 200, #79 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and #4 on the Top Heatseekers charts, this release has only grown in popularity over the years as it is discovered by more and more hip-hop heads looking for the left-of-center.

DESCRIPTION
Finally back on vinyl. Now as a double vinyl LP, officially reissued. Must have! 3 Feet High and Rising is the debut studio album by hip hop trio De La Soul and was released on March 3, 1989 It marked the first of three full- length collaborations with producer Prince Paul, which would become the critical and commercial peak of both parties. Critically, as well as commercially, the album was a success. It contains the singles, "Me Myself and I", "The Magic Number", "Buddy", and "Eye Know". The album title came from the Johnny Cash song "Five Feet High and Rising". It is listed on Rolling Stone's 200 Essential Rock Records and The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. When Village Voice held its annual Pazz & Jop Critics Poll for 1989, 3 Feet High and Rising was ranked #1. It was also listed on the Rolling Stone's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Released amid the 1989 boom in gangsta rap, which gravitated towards hardcore, confrontational, violent lyrics, De La Soul's uniquely positive style made them an oddity beginning with the first single, "Me, Myself and I". Their positivity meant many observers labeled them a 'hippie' group, based on their declaration of the 'D.A.I.S.Y. Age' (Da. Inner. Soul. Yall). Sampling artists as diverse as Hall & Oates, Steely Dan and The Turtles, 3 Feet High and Rising is often viewed as the stylistic beginning of 1990s alternative hip hop (and especially jazz rap).

Though his talents were evident on those Leaders of the New School releases, Busta went on a series of features that only built up the public's desire for a solo Busta album. Right out of the gate, Busta dropped his classic debut single "Woo Hah!! (Got You All in Check)" that made it abundantly clear he was to be mentioned among Hip Hop's greatest solo artists. The energy and originality packed on that one song set a tone for the album that displays Busta's raw talent and ability to bend words with his ever rambunctious flow. The album features production by Easy Mo Bee, DJ Scratch, Q-Tip, and J Dilla. Songs such as "Everything Remains Raw", "Abandon Ship", and "Still Shining" all rise above as The Coming's stand-out tracks, but "Ill Vibe" is the album's crown jewel moment. Busta sounds right at home over this J Dilla beat, trading verses with his Native Tongue cohort Q-Tip. The Coming was a critical and commercial success for Busta Rhymes. It reached #6 on the Billboard 200 chart in 1996 and has since received a platinum certification from RIAA. As mentioned, The Coming boasts the hit single "Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check " which reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1996. It was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. It also ended up sporting another hit single, It's a Party featuring Zhané. The Coming shows amazing variety where Busta can break free from the bells and the whistles of the Busta Dungeon Dragon flow to explore other ways of leaving our jaws open by his incredible lyricism. The Coming surely lives up to its title, as Busta delivers a performance that ignited his impeccable solo career.

"Things I Seen," the highly anticipated collaborative album between Bronze Nazareth and Termanology, is nothing short of a masterclass in hip-hop artistry. This project represents the perfect intersection of two legendary forces in the underground scene, each bringing their unique flavor to the table. With Bronze Nazareth’s unparalleled production and poetic lyricism joining forces with Termanology’s razor-sharp rhymes and magnetic presence, "Things I Seen" is an experience that transcends mere music—it’s an audible journey through life, struggle, and triumph.
The creation of "Things I Seen" is a testament to the synergy of two creative titans who have long earned their places in hip-hop’s pantheon. Bronze Nazareth, known for crafting lush, cinematic soundscapes, and Termanology, celebrated for his lyricism and storytelling, embarked on this project with a shared vision: to create an album that is both timeless and authentic. The result is a seamless blend of gritty beats, thought-provoking lyrics, and an unrelenting dedication to the craft.
The album's genesis can be traced to a mutual admiration between the two artists, with both recognizing the potential to create something extraordinary together. Sessions were filled with late-night conversations, shared stories, and a deep dive into the realities of their respective journeys. This organic collaboration is evident in the cohesive sound and thematic depth of "Things I Seen."
From the raw introspection of tracks like “Sometimes You Go” to the hard-hitting bars on cuts like “Alotta Prose (I Know)” and “Beast Mode,” this album delivers a dynamic listening experience. Fans of both artists will find themselves revisiting the project time and again, uncovering new layers of meaning with each listen. "Things I Seen" isn’t just an album; it’s a declaration of the enduring power of hip-hop and the stories it tells.

In discussions of the classic hip-hop era of the 1980s, frequently lost in the shuffle is the homegrown scene of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is unfortunate due to the wealth of talent the scene produced, including bona fide legends such as Schoolly D, Three Times Dope, Cash Money & Marvelous, and of course, the wildly successful DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. Frequently underrated is Tuff Crew, who were billed as "Philly's First Rap Supergroup", and consisted of a crew of ethnically diverse MCs and a DJ, who were regular performers of North Philly's famed After Midnight club, and who definitely represented a more hardcore rap style than some of their fellow Philly crews. Throughout the mid-to-late 1980s, Tuff Crew performed alongside some of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time, including Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, and 2 Live Crew, but never reached the heights of commercial success, despite landing various singles on the Billboard Rap charts. The peak of this success undoubtedly came with the release of their 1988 LP Danger Zone, which featured 10 tracks of classic 80s rap, including the Billboard-charting "My Part Of Town" (#23 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles charts). This album cemented Tuff Crew in the hip-hop history books as one of the dopest crews to ever come out of Philly, and unlike most late 80s rap albums, the lyrics and beats still bang hard in 2025.

DESCRIPTION
Those profiled include Egyptian guitarist Omar Khorshid, maverick producer/arranger/composer Elias Rahbani, mysterious talents like Nicolas Dick and Robert Maalouf and the father of the label’s founder, Abdallah Chahine, a pianist of immense talent. As told in detailed liner notes by DJ, music researcher and legacy-keeper Ernesto Chahoud and Natalie Shooter, this period of Lebanese music formed the soundtrack to the city of Beirut during its multiple transformations, from its 1950s to 1960s heyday as ‘the Switzerland of the Orient’ through to the mid 1970s and 1980s, when it soundtracked the tragic days of the Lebanese Civil War. From Chahoud’s liner notes: “I spent years going through thousands of titles from one of the largest catalog of Lebanese and Arabic music, by one of the earliest labels in the Arab world, Voix De L’Orient, to handpick the 12 songs that represent a survey into this momentous catalog. The Lebanese musical experiment, stretching almost seven decades, has offered one of the most complex and fully fledged modern Oriental scenes of the Arab world. These 12 songs were released in different periods and embody a wide range of musical ideas from the most adventurous on the Voix De L’Orient label, those musicians that played major roles in the renaissance of ancient musical traditions. So, from the ’60s and ’70s, you’ll hear Adballah Chahine improvising on Oriental scales on a custom-made piano that he developed in order to play quarter tones; you’ll engage the radical approach to folkloric music from the legendary Iraqi composer and oud player Munir Bechir; you’ll enjoy the timeless blend of Occidental and Oriental forms as fused by the genius Elias Rahbani. The songs by Georgette Sayegh, Adib Abou Antoun and Robert Maalouf give a sense of Lebanon’s unique ’70s and ’80s pop sounds. You might think that this music comes from a foreign, faraway culture, and I suppose it does, for some, but this music is close to us all. This anthology is presented 100 percent free of cultural appropriation. This album is a genuine attempt to escape the ephemeral aspect of everyday, fast music fashions. This album is absolute beauty to play out loud, while waiting for the second volume to come.”

Cold Heat is Eothen “Egon” Alapatt’s a follow-up to the famous Funky 16 Corners set he curated in the early 2000s. And like that one, Cold Heat is overflowing with great bits that had barely (or never) been heard by the rest of the world at large. Egon went through a range of rare singles, masters, and demos and came up with tunes that burn with a brightness that's undeniable.
The grooves are all on the harder end of the James Brown Funky People side of the spectrum and some tracks are by names that finally got their due here, thanks to Egon, Now-Again, and some of the other funky forces doing the good work over the years.

DESCRIPTION
Jackie Mittoo’s ‘Reggae Magic’ is a new collection from the great Jackie Mittoo. The album features a mixture of classic tunes and rarities from the period 1967-74, when Mittoo was at the height of his musical powers.
Mittoo’s solo career began after the end of The Skatalites in 1965. He began pushing new musical boundaries, creating a uniquely identifiable organ-led funky reggae sound that owed as much to Booker T and The MGs, Jimmy Smith, Stax and Motown as to the post-ska and emergent rocksteady island rhythms of Kingston, Jamaica.
His solo work at the legendary Studio One spanned seven albums and hundreds of singles. Aside from producer and founder Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd, it’s hard to think of anyone more central to the sound and success of Studio One than Mittoo; keyboard player extraordinaire, songwriter, arranger, musician, truly the Keyboard King at Studio One.
Jackie Mittoo had been the youngest founding member of The Skatalites (at age 16), probably the most important group in Jamaican music. After they split, he became leader of the three pivotal groups at Studio One – The Soul Brothers, The Soul Vendors and Sound Dimension. He also became musical director for Studio One, helping create countless hits for singers Ken Boothe, Bob Andy, The Wailers, John Holt, Delroy Wilson and more – unforgettable tunes like Alton Ellis’ ‘I’m Still in Love with You’, Marcia Griffiths’ ‘Feel Like Jumping’, The Heptones’ ‘Baby Why’ and others.
Between 1965 and 1968, many of the tunes created at Studio One can be attributed to Mittoo – timeless instrumental tracks, recorded either under his own name or those of The Soul Brothers, Soul Vendors and Sound Dimension, that have become the basis for literally 1000s and 1000s of Jamaican songs over many decades, giving the music an unsurpassed longevity.
The endurance of his music was as a direct result of significant developments in Jamaican music in the 1970s, namely the creation of three important new styles: Dub, Deejay and Dancehall. In the early 1970s Mittoo’s instrumental tracks were used as the musical source for a series of classic Studio One dub albums. At the same time Deejays at Studio One, including Dillinger, Prince Jazzbo and Dennis Alcapone, began toasting over these same popular rhythms to create their own new songs.
In the mid-70s, a new generation of Studio One singers and deejays, including Sugar Minott, Freddie McGregor, Johnny Osbourne, Michigan & Smiley and others, began once again creating new melodies over these original instrumentals, signalling the birth of a new Jamaican style that became known as ‘dancehall’. As dancehall swept across the island, rival producers copied these now classic rhythms.
These original Jackie Mittoo-driven tunes spread like a virus throughout Jamaican music; be they the instrumental cuts to tunes such as Alton Ellis’ ‘Mad Mad’ , ‘I’m Just A Guy’, Larry Marshall’s ‘Mean Girl’, Slim Smith’s ‘Rougher Yet’, and instrumentals such as Mittoo’s classic ‘Hot Milk’ or ‘One Step Beyond’, The Sound Dimension’s ‘Real Rock’, ‘Heavy Rock’, ‘Full Up’, ‘Drum Song’, ‘Rockfort Rock’ ... and the list goes on. These tracks became a constant soundtrack to the island, emitting from the ever-present sound of speaker boxes strung up around dancehalls.
This recycling travelled even farther afield; The Sound Dimension’s instrumental ‘Real Rock’, updated by Willie Williams on his classic ‘Armageddon Time’ was in turn covered by The Clash. Lily Allen sampled Mittoo’s debut solo single ‘Free Soul’ for number one hit ‘Smile’; Dawn Penn’s ‘You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No)’, accompanied by The Soul Vendors, was revived by Penn and producers Steely & Cleevie in 1994, since covered by Rihanna, Ghostface Killah, Stephen Marley, Damian Marley and Beyonce.
And so it goes; an endless time-leaping, continent-hopping diasporic musical map of the world with all roads essentially leading back to one man – Jackie Mittoo.Jackie Mittoo’s ‘Reggae Magic’ is a new collection from the great Jackie Mittoo.

DESCRIPTION
AOI: Bionix is De La Soul's sixth full-length album, released on December 4, 2001. The first single, "Baby Phat" featuring Yummy Bingham and Devin the Dude, was an ode to larger sized women. Elsewhere, "Held Down", featuring Cee-Lo, found Posdnuos in an introspective mood as he mused on fatherhood, religion, and fame. Slick Rick also made an appearance on "What We Do (For Love)"; a humorous song about puberty and sexual discovery. The album featured skits with a character by the name of Reverend Do Good, which worked as social commentary as well as the intros and outros of the songs. The final Reverend Do Good skit acts as one final advertisement for Ghost Weed as heard on De La Soul's previous album, Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump. A mischievous teenager takes a hit of the substance, then morphs into Slum Village frontman J Dilla, who provides the intro and outro to the marijuana-themed song "Peer Pressure" (which he also produced).

DESCRIPTION
The third Roots album (counting Organix) is still criminally slept on. Thankfully DGC has given it a proper vinyl reissue so more heads can get up on this 1996 hip-hop classic. Illadelph Halflife is the starting point of the sound that has dominated their subsequent records: half live, half studio with a thin line in between. Illadelph captures that dynamic in its rawest state, when The Roots still flaunted home studio-type EQs and non-radio hooks (waaay before the Tonight Show era). This aesthetic is best captured on the album's many standouts like "Concerto of the Desperado," "Respond React," "Push Up Ya Lighter," "Clones," "Universe At War" featuring Common, "Ital" featuring Q-Tip, and "What They Do." 20 tracks on double vinyl, recommended.

Upon release, the album was met with widespread critical acclaim, with Pitchfork giving it a 10/10 rating along with various other critics praising it for its brutally honest depiction of gang violence and conflict as opposed to the often-glorified portrayal in the genre and the wider media. The album has cemented its place in hip-hop history and has since gone on to achieve 6x platinum certification in the US, selling over 3.5 million copies, and has achieved platinum status in the UK as well.
