DESCRIPTION
Just in time for the 25th anniversary release of Cali Agents’ debut LP, How The West Was One, Coalmine Reissues in partnership with Pockets Linted Entertainment is pleased to announce their special edition reissue. This pressing marks just the second time the album’s ever been repressed, over 21 years removed from the alternate cover edition circa 2003.
Released as collaborative effort between West Coast lyricists Rasco and Planet Asia, the album falls on the heels of the duo’s subsequent solo efforts; Rasco who released his debut LP, Time Waits for No Man in 1998 via Stones Throw, and PA’s self-titled debut that dropped the following year.
Standing at 16 tracks – including the bonus track, “Point Blank Range” -- the album flawlessly complements each emcee’s rhyme styles. Where on the one hand, Rasco personifies the seasoned rap veteran armed with his baritone flow and no-nonsense rhyme style, Planet Asia on the other, embodies the battle-ready spitter armed with a rapid fire delivery.
Combined with a diverse line-up of producers that boasts the likes of Madlib, Panik (Molemen), M-Boogie, Paul Nice and more, the pair create an incredibly pleasing offering that has been embraced by underground rap connoisseurs since the dawn of the millennium.

“Rasco and Planet Asia are battle-rappers of the highest order, excelling in nearly every aspect of rapping...." -Exclaim!
“Cali Agents craft a surprising debut that strikes a balance between different hip-hop crowds, East and West Coast, underground and above, but manage to maintain their artistic integrity.” -AllMusic

DESCRIPTION
Mind Over Matter by Zion I stands as a powerful testament to the group’s innovation in hip-hop, but it carries a deeper weight following the untimely passing of Baba Zumbi in 2021. Zumbi's conscious lyricism and spiritual presence were the heart and soul of Zion I, and his passing left an undeniable void in the hip-hop community.
The 2000 release of Mind Over Matter combined Zumbi's socially conscious rhymes with producer Amp Live’s futuristic beats, creating a sound that was both ahead of its time and deeply rooted in the traditions of hip-hop. Tracks like the Planet Asia assisted “Critical” and “Inner Light” are emblematic of this balance, where complex lyricism meets genre-bending production. The album’s themes of self-awareness, community, and resilience resonate just as strongly today, showcasing Zion I’s unique ability to fuse the personal with the political in a way that feels both intimate and revolutionary.
For these reasons and more, the album was heralded with much acclaim, even earning a nomination for Album of the Year by The Source in 2000, and later being ranked among the 30 best underground hip-hop albums since 2000 by HipHopDX. These accolades solidified its influence in the underground hip-hop space.
Marking 25 years since its original release, Mind Over Matter is being reissued through Coalmine Reissues. This special edition serves not only as a tribute to the genius of Zion I, but also as a celebration of Baba Zumbi’s enduring legacy. His spirit lives on through these songs, offering both longtime fans and new listeners a chance to reconnect with the timeless messages he left behind.

DESCRIPTION
In many ways, Both Sides of the Brain, released on Hiero Imperium in 2000, is a key milestone in Del’s career. He had already built a strong following with his two albums for Elektra Records; I Wish My Brother George Was Here (1991) and No Need For Alarm (1993). Beyond establishing himself as an innovative force, his time on Elektra also served as a launching pad for his crew, Hieroglyphics. In 1997, Del released Future Development, a project that was originally intended to be his third album for the major label, but shortly before its scheduled release, they terminated his deal. As other members of Hiero crew had also begun losing major label support, these shifts freed them to take control of their own destiny with their independent label, Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings.
This newfound independence sparked creative growth that shines through on Both Sides of the Brain. While Del was involved in the production on his previous albums, here he takes a more definitive role in shaping the album’s sound, producing the majority of the tracks with select contributions from Domino, Casual, A-Plus, El-P, Prince Paul and Khaos Unique. The beats range from funk-laden bass grooves and spacey sample collages to robotics-tinged turntablism and game-influenced loops, providing a wide sonic canvas behind Del’s flow. Coincidentally, some of the guest producers—Casual, El-P, A-Plus and Khaos Unique—also provide the only guest verses for the album.
Lyrically, Del is in rare form on Both Sides of the Brain, sounding fully settled into his style, as if rhyming is merely second nature. He strikes the balance between a stream of consciousness flow and pinpointed intent, all complemented by his larger than life personality, and showcases his ability to zone out in freestyle mode just as well as he can focus on existence and life experiences. From humorous observations on body odor (“If You Must”), to sharp blow-by-blow takes on fair-weather friends (“Pet Peeves”) and industry fakes (“Fake As Fuck”), to serious cautionary tales of alcohol (“Skull & Crossbones”) and addiction (“Soopa Feen”), and finally to a full-blown ode to video-game culture (“Proto Culture”), Del covers it all.
Ultimately, Both Sides of the Brain feels and sounds like Del is hitting full stride with his creative process, and finding comfort in pushing the boundaries.
