Royal Fam's second album, "Yesterday, Today, Iz Tomorrow", was recorded in 1999 for Wu-Tang Records and released in 2000 in Europe without the group's knowledge or permission, with unmixed songs and wrong tracklist. However, in 2021, the original version of the album was officially released thru De Rap Winkel Records. Julio Ernesto Estrada Rincón aka Fruko has probably had one the busiest recording careers in the salsa biz! Not only did Discos Fuentes release some 18 full LPs under the “Fruko” banner over a 20-year period, in addition there were various side-projects like Afrosound and Orquesta Full Salsa, and also one-off studio projects like Los Pambelé. ‘Cannabis’ is the only song released under this name and happens to be a killer organ-driven weed inspired salsa song that funnily enough was renamed ‘Yerbabuena’ (peppermint) when included on a 1972 compilation…
On the flipside, we find Los Darlings de Huanuco, a pioneer band in introducing rock sounds into the local music scene of this Peruvian city. Under the inspiration of international bands such as Led Zeppelin, Santana or The Ventures and also local artists like Jean Paul “El Troglodita” or Los York’s they recorded ‘Marihuana’. Since the band background was cumbia, the resulting sound of the song is a perfect combination of both worlds despite the original idea was recording a rock number.

DESCRIPTION

In the early 90s gangsta rap dominated on the West Coast led by N.W.A., Above The Law, CMW, Ice-T, and Bay Area artists like Too $hort. The East Coast had harder acts like EPMD and Kool G Rap, alongside politically and socially conscious groups like Public Enemy, BDP, and Poor Righteous Teachers. In contrast, groups like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and Brand Nubian emerged with a more positive and laid-back vibe. It was during this time frame that Oakland, CA’s Del The Funky Homosapien (PKA Del Tha Funkee Homosapien) emerged incorporating elements and styles akin to The Native Tongue's East Coast Hip-Hop with a P-Funk-influenced West Coast vibe.
I Wish My Brother George Was Here debuted in 1991 under Del’s cousin Ice Cube’s Street Knowledge imprint. The album was quite the opposite of "Street Knowledge" with 14 tracks of funk-filled beats and Del spitting humorous stories as an outsider to the gangsta rap scene. The amazing production was overseen by Ice Cube’s production crew The Boogie Men who also produced Da Lench Mob’s Guerillas In Tha Mist the following year. I Wish My Brother George Was Here set the stage for the success of other West Coast acts like The Pharcyde and helped Del to bring forward his crew of Hieroglyphics with Souls Of Mischief and Casual. I Wish My Brother George Was Here is a classic from the lead single “Mistadobalina” to the jazz sample cut of “The Wacky World of Rapid Transit”, to the trippy P-funk laced “Sunny Meadowz” and the hard-hitting “Hoodz Come In Dozens” with a touch of freestyle rap on The Meter’s sampled track “Same Ol’ Thing". Del delivers a no-skips funky light-hearted album that has stood the test of time.

DESCRIPTION
GROWING PAINS is my first attempt ever at a somewhat conceptual and full project . It’s my first sonic art piece. I did three versions of the demos before coming to something I was happy with. The cover art and its distortion is to represent the confusion, fear, anxiety, depression and mess it is of me finding myself on this new music/life journey and the death of an older version of me. In the music there’s a lot of references to spirituality, my frustration with the youth and my people, & self empowerment lines/verses. GROWING PAINS is an extension of me and if you’re a thinker who lives life through questions and concerns...this poetry is for you. Thanks to johnboybeats for engineering the bulk of the tape and producing “Black Petunia” and Sean for his little contribution on songs like “Woo-SAH”.
