DESCRIPTION
A versatile pianist who has been a valuable asset on many sessions through the years, Bernie Senensky has long been one of Canada's finest jazz musicians. Senensky started with classical piano lessons when he was nine and discovered jazz around five years later. He played locally as a teenager (including with Lennie Breau and Dave Young), led the house band in various Holiday Inns all over Canada and settled in Toronto in 1968. Senensky has performed with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Elvin Jones, Maynard Ferguson's Big Band, Rob McConnell's Boss Brass, Phil Woods, Dizzy Gillespie, Terry Gibbs, Buddy DeFranco, Art Pepper, Scott Hamilton and Bill Watrous, among many other visiting Americans. Throughout the 1980s he was a regular member of the Moe Koffman Quintet. As a leader, Senensky recorded for RCI, PM, Unity and Timeless, and as a sideman he made recordings with Moe Koffman, Gillespie, Eugene Amaro, Peter Appleyard, Herbie Spanier and Ted Moses. ~ Scott Yanow

DESCRIPTION
They were, or rather are, the first representatives of the latest musical evolution that has mastered the world. We were, and still are, a dominated, wondrous audience quite fascinated by a different way of life through music. It seems that what Stone Alliance was saying -- about telling a story each time one plays -- is true. We listen to the story woven by the music of Stone Alliance and we identify with it; in the long run we become enriched. And who else but AMIGOS would enrich us? Thank you, Stone Alliance!
Club de Arte

While most of the jazz world is heading toward either commercialism or the avant-garde, it's a pleasure to find a group such as Stone Alliance filling in this ever widening gap.
CBF

This album was recorded after the American trio had stayed a year in Buenos Aires, playing with and absorbing the talents of the Argentinian musicians who accompany here. The result is a dazzling blend of styles, and Stone Alliance's best effort to date. There is some fierce playing, notably from saxophonist Steve Grossman, but the overall feeling is Latin American melancholy and rhythm.

Percussionist Don Alias seems most adept at this synthesis; his African jungle percussion is delightful when positioned against the throb of congas, whistles and other South American instruments.
T.E.

What seven musicians can do with the aid of double and triple tracking, overdubbing, mixing and editing is not only astounding -- but an absolute delight.

Highly recommended to the intelligent jazz-lover.
Mark Allen, Record Review

This gem of a recording, done in Buenos Aires, features the trio known as Stone Alliance -- Steve Grossman, tenor sax, Gene Perla, bass, keyboards and guitar, and Don Alias, percussion and guitar -- augmented by local musicians. The music, as expected, is highly rhythmic, but also unexpectedly eletronic in spots. The traditional -- abandon on the bright "I'll Tell You Tomorrow" -- is contrasted with synthesizer overdub on the languid bolero, "Mujeres Sud Americanas." "Amigos," a surprise favorite, is a brief three-part exposition of what Latin percussion should sound like.

“New York’s Harlem River Drive is a dividing line, a highway where the rich zip past the poor,” says singer Jimmy Norman. Eddie Palmieri’s Latin-funk band of the same name tackled these hard truths, playing prisons and speak- ing to the common man. Ultimately, Norman and Palmieri made a powerful socio-political statement
that continues to resonate to this day."

DESCRIPTION
When initially released in 1971, many critics panned Eddie Palmieri’s album Harlem River Drive. Those critics were wrong. Regardless of critical opinion, the release was not the crossover success Palmieri and Roulette Records had hoped for, at least in the immediate. Over the years the release has developed a following among listeners, DJs, and aficionados of rare-grooves.
The record may have been recorded towards the end of the Latin soul era, yet it features that genre's wonderful mix of Puerto Rican soul, Spanish Harlem Latin, and New York funk. Palmieri worked with an incredibly talented crew of Latin and R&B session musicians to create this quintessential New York vibe, a synthesis of funk and Afro-Cuban sounds. Contributors include Victor Venegas from Mongo Santamaria’s band, Palmieri’s brother Charlie, an accomplished musician in his own right, Bruce Fowler who went on to join Frank Zappa’s band, Dick Meza who went on to great things with Tito Puente, Ray Barretto and Celia Cruz, as well as Andy Gonzalez who’s pedigree includes recordings with Barretto, Johnny Pacheco, Willie Colon
and even Chico O’Farrill. Also appearing Randy Brecker and one of the all-time
greatest of the greats Bernard Purdy.
An over-arching theme of Harlem River Drive is the thought that, as Palmieri puts it “The U.S. is richest country, all this immense wealth, side by side with the most intense poverty, racial prejudice; how is that possible?” A question that’s perhaps more even more relevant today than it was in 1971. A question that can be further explored with Get On Down’s reissue of this seminal recording.

DESCRIPTION
Joey Pastrana had a special gift for singing songs in both English and Spanish. Along with other boogaloo luminaries like Pete Rodriguez and Joe Cuba; Joey Pastrana was responsible for introducing Latin music to many English speakers across America. With a wonderful and talented orchestra, Joey Pastrana paved the way for the new Latin music fusions that have come to be known as the Latin boogaloo. A master of the timbales, Pastrana was also a brilliant singer known internationally for his energizing live performances. Honing his musical skills in his beloved New York City, Joey was enamored at an early age by the sights and sounds coming out of Spanish Harlem during the early sixties. Taking his cue from the R&B and Jazz that was popular at that time, Pastrana became a master of rolling rhythms that shook up hips in dance floors throughout the world. One of the top artists of the boogaloo/Latin soul era, Joey Pastrana s music is regarded as one the most wonderful and exquisite examples of the world-famous New York Latin sound.

DESCRIPTION
“Libre – Free” is the now legendary second album by the short-lived Brooklyn Sounds and is arguably even better than their self-titled debut, displaying a more mature and practiced sound, no doubt honed by their experiences playing more gigs in support of their first record.
Brooklyn Sounds were one of a handful of garage salsa bands from the independent scene that was gathering steam in the early 1970s in the New York boroughs, despite little support or exposure in the mainstream Latin music industry from more dominant labels like Fania, Mericana, Cotique and Alegre. As with many others, Brooklyn Sounds briefly fluoresced in a burst of creativity and defiance, yet flamed out shortly thereafter, dying like a flower among the ruins of burned-out apartment blocks in the barrios of its home city.
Though the band only cut two LPs and a couple singles in their brief half-decade of existence, and never really broke out of the cuchifrito circuit in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, their music gradually spread far and wide, eventually becoming a sought-after global commodity by the late 1990s.
In contrast to the first album “Libre – Free” is uptempo and ebullient, with fewer slow songs and more confident, creative arrangements, full of heavy Nuyorican underground salsa dura propelled by raw trombones, off-kilter piano and in-your-face percussion. Standout tracks include the uplifting, anthemic ‘Libre soy’, and ‘Ha llegado el momento’, with its minor key ‘Moliendo café’ quote at the beginning—both of which have become dance floor anthems over the years. Another mid-tempo killer is ‘Guaguancó tropical’, a favorite in Colombia since the 1970s.
A perfect blend of barrio attitude and Caribbean swing, the album proves Brooklyn has sabor y salsa!

DESCRIPTION
Raúl Llerena, aka Ranil, was one of the central figures of the Amazonian music scene. Based in Iquitos, he founded his own record label –Producciones Llerena– and shaped what is now known as the psychedelic sound of Amazonian cumbia.
The few LPs and 45s released on his label are legendarily hard to find, let alone the condition… Some of them were issued under the name Ranil y su Conjunto Tropical. They recorded this hypnotic and percussive version of ‘Sonido amazónico’ that was released as an LP-only track.
We're now pleased to release it for the first time as a 45, to the delight of DJs and 7”s collectors.
On the flipside we find Los Wembler’s de Iquitos, responsible for some of the most popular songs of the psychedelic cumbia genre, including the outstanding ‘Sonido Amazónico’.
Prepare yourself to be amazed by these two stunning Peruvian cumbias packed with psychedelic guitars and hard-hitting percussions. First time 45 reissue.
